For most students, transferring universities barely attracts attention beyond family and friends. For Lin Muran, it became national news. The actor, widely regarded as one of the brightest talents of China's post-2005 generation, sparked intense discussion after reports revealed he planned to swap a coveted place at the Central Academy of Drama for a vocational college programme, leaving many wondering what could possibly justify such an unexpected move.

What began as a routine academic notice quickly turned into one of the most discussed entertainment topics on Chinese social media this month. The controversy centred on reports that Lin Muran, currently enrolled at the prestigious Central Academy of Drama, had applied to transfer to a vocational arts college in Hunan. Days later, after mounting criticism and endless speculation, his team confirmed that the entire transfer process had been fully suspended.

The discussion erupted after a public announcement revealed that Lin had sought to move from the Central Academy of Drama's Action Performance programme to a Drama and Film Performance diploma programme at Hunan Vocational College of Art

Why Did Lin Muran Try to Leave Central Academy of Drama

The official reason cited family circumstances, specifically the need to remain closer to his elderly grandparents and assist with their care. For many observers, however, the explanation raised more questions than answers.

The Central Academy of Drama is widely regarded as one of China's most respected acting institutions and has produced generations of major stars.

Moving from one of the country's most elite performing arts universities to a vocational college is an academic route rarely seen, particularly for someone with Lin Muran's educational record. That record is exactly why the story exploded.

Before entering university, Lin Muran achieved an impressive set of results. He reportedly ranked first nationally in the Action Performance examination at Central Academy of Drama, first in acting examinations at Shanghai Theatre Academy, and first among male broadcasting applicants at the Communication University of China.

His Gaokao score of 437 was also comfortably above the admission requirements of the vocational programme he planned to join. For many C-netz, it felt like watching someone voluntarily swap a first-class train ticket for a local bus journey halfway through the trip.

Lin Muran's Team Breaks Silence on Transfer Controversy and Academic Plans

As discussion intensified, another theory began circulating online. Some users questioned whether the transfer was truly linked to family reasons or whether the pressures of balancing university studies with an increasingly busy filming schedule had become difficult to manage.

The timing inevitably fuelled speculation. While reports cited family responsibilities in Hunan, Lin Muran was also linked to active filming projects in other provinces and is expected to continue expanding his acting career throughout 2026.

Critics argued that if family care was the primary concern, maintaining a demanding filming schedule across China would be equally challenging. Unverified online discussions also focused on the structure of his university programme.

Some Cnetz suggested that repeated absences due to filming commitments may have complicated academic progress, while others noted that taking temporary leave from studies has long been common practice among actors. What puzzled many was not the possibility of pausing education, but the unusual choice of moving from a bachelor's degree pathway to a diploma programme.

Pursuit of Jade Star Lin Muran Faces Scrutiny Over Unexpected Education Decision

The debate quickly split fans into several camps. One group argued that education should not be sacrificed for short-term career opportunities, particularly when Lin had earned admission through exceptional academic and artistic achievements. They viewed the transfer proposal as a risky decision that could affect his long-term development.

Others felt the criticism was excessive. They pointed out that academic choices remain personal matters and that outsiders rarely know the full circumstances behind family decisions. For these supporters, the intense scrutiny reflected the unrealistic expectations often placed on young celebrities.

As the controversy gathered momentum, Lin Muran's team finally stepped in. On 30 May, an account associated with the actor's official support team released a statement confirming that all transfer-related arrangements had been completely halted.

The statement stressed that future plans would be carefully considered based on both his professional development and academic situation, while reaffirming support for his long-term growth.

The clarification may have closed the transfer chapter, but it has not entirely ended public curiosity.

For now, Lin Muran remains one of the most closely watched young actors of his generation. Alongside the continuing success of Pursuit of Jade, he is preparing for upcoming projects including The First Jasmine, where he will portray assassin Han Mingxi opposite Bai Lu

His career trajectory appears stronger than ever, yet the unexpected university saga has shown that audiences are paying just as much attention to what happens off-screen as they are to his performances on-screen.
