| Zhao Lusi and Song Weilong Rumoured for Youku S+ Xianxia Drama “The Adventures of Jian Chou” (Credits: Youku) |
Chinese actress Zhao Lusi is reportedly in advanced discussions with Youku to headline its S+ budget xianxia drama The Adventures of Jian Chou (朝花不见愁), marking what could be her long-awaited return to television after more than a year away from filming.
The project, adapted from Shi Jing’s novel I Do Not Become an Immortal, is positioned as a female-led cultivation epic and is expected to enter production within the next few months if negotiations conclude as planned.
The drama centres on Jian Chou, a formidable cultivator who rises through a brutal path of revenge and power after a betrayal by her husband.
Armed with exceptional abilities yet resistant to the idea of immortality, the character sits firmly within the modern xianxia mould of morally complex heroines.
Industry attention is further sharpened by the involvement of the director behind Love Between Fairy and Devil, signalling a continuation of the visually polished, emotionally driven fantasy style that has proven commercially reliable.
Zhao Lusi’s attachment to the project follows a period of career uncertainty and recalibration.
After pausing work on Lover/Almost Lover due to health-related issues, she remained absent from drama sets for over a year. During that time, her professional situation shifted, including a high-profile contract dispute that was later resolved, allowing her to reset her career trajectory under new management.
Her resurgence was supported by the success of Hidden Love and Love’s Ambition, reinforcing her status as a bankable lead in the streaming era.
Recent speculation had linked Zhao Lusi to multiple costume dramas, including a potential collaboration with Song Weilong.
However, those reports appear to have cooled following her announcement of the “Stay Romantic” concert tour, with a Bangkok stop scheduled as the opening leg.
The pivot to music activity, coupled with teasers of unreleased songs, briefly suggested a delayed return to acting. The emergence of The Adventures of Jian Chou as a post-tour project now reframes that narrative, pointing instead to a strategic re-entry.

Narratively, the series offers a layered dynamic beyond its revenge premise. Jian Chou’s journey brings her into conflict with her former husband Xie Buchen while entangling her with Fu Chaosheng, a morally ambiguous figure who challenges both fate and orthodoxy.
The interplay between righteousness and defiance, alongside the tension between mortality and transcendence, positions the drama within a more character-driven branch of xianxia storytelling.
For Zhao Lusi, the role would mark a tonal shift towards a heavier, more conflicted heroine compared to her previous romantic leads. Supporters view the project as a strong comeback vehicle, citing the scale of Youku’s S+ productions and the director’s track record as indicators of quality.
Many also point to Zhao Lusi’s proven ability to carry emotionally intense narratives, suggesting this could be a defining role if executed well. More cautious voices, however, question whether the market is nearing saturation with similar xianxia tropes and whether the adaptation can differentiate itself in an increasingly crowded genre.
There is also scrutiny around potential casting, particularly the male lead opposite Zhao Lusi. While no official pairing has been confirmed, discussion threads are already speculating about chemistry, billing order, and whether the production will prioritise narrative balance or star power. In a genre where audience investment often hinges on on-screen pairing, the eventual casting decision is likely to shape early reception as much as the source material itself.
For now, The Adventures of Jian Chou remains in the negotiation stage, but its combination of high budget, established creative leadership, and a high-profile lead places it firmly on the industry watchlist.
If Zhao Lusi formally signs on, the drama will not only mark her return but also test her transition into more mature, high-stakes storytelling within the xianxia framework.
The coming months will determine whether this project delivers on its early promise or becomes another entry in an oversupplied genre.
What do you reckon — is this the comeback role that resets the xianxia game, or just another polished fantasy in a crowded field?
