Just a month after confirming the end of his 34-year marriage, Tetta Sugimoto is already back in the headlines—this time not for a role, but for a reported new relationship.
According to Josei Seven, the 60-year-old actor is now living with a woman in her 30s, marking a swift and rather eyebrow-raising shift from long-term domestic stability to a new chapter that’s moved at serious pace.
The report places Sugimoto in mid-April, casually dressed and stepping out of a luxury foreign car in Tokyo before being joined by a woman described as elegant and low-key, wearing a striking black dress.
The two were seen heading into a high-end residential building together, looking every bit like a couple who had already settled into a routine rather than testing the waters.
Professionally, there’s been no slowdown. Sugimoto is currently appearing in the stage adaptation of Kishibe no Album, running between Tokyo and Osaka.
The production, based on the late screenwriter Taichi Yamada’s work, has him starring opposite Satomi Kobayashi, reinforcing his long-standing reputation as one of Japan’s most dependable character actors.

From his memorable turn in Amachan to decades across film, television and theatre, Sugimoto’s career has rarely missed a beat—even as his personal life now becomes the bigger talking point.
That personal shift began in March, when Tetta Sugimoto publicly confirmed his divorce from actress Hazuki Kozu after more than three decades of marriage.
The announcement, delivered with measured calm on social media, described a mutual decision. Still, the timing caught many off guard.
The pair, married since 1992 with two children, had long been viewed as one of the industry’s more grounded couples, despite openly admitting to fiery disagreements over the years.
Background only adds to the contrast. Kozu, daughter of composer Yoshiyuki Kozu and actress Meiko Nakamura, comes from an established artistic family, while Sugimoto famously had a rebellious youth before carving out a steady acting career. It was always an unlikely pairing that somehow worked—until it didn’t.
Now, attention has turned to the reported new partner. Described by insiders as a refined woman in her 30s with a resemblance to TV personality Megumi, she is said to share a home with Tetta Sugimoto in a high-end Tokyo apartment.
Sightings suggest a settled dynamic: shared drives after rehearsals, casual outings, even dog walks near their residence. Not exactly the behaviour of a fleeting romance.

As for Kozu, her reaction has been notably composed.
When approached, she reportedly said she did not recognise the woman and appeared largely unbothered, remarking that her former husband has always had female friends and that, after everything they had experienced together, she sees no need to dwell on it. Her stance—measured, slightly amused, and quietly detached—has only added another layer to the story.
Some fans have taken a pragmatic view, pointing out that both individuals are free to move on, especially after such a long marriage. Others, however, have questioned the speed of the transition, suggesting it feels abrupt given how recently the divorce was announced. There’s also a segment treating the entire situation with a shrug, framing it as a reminder that celebrity lives rarely follow the tidy timelines audiences expect.
For now, Tetta Sugimoto’s agency has not commented on the reports, leaving much of the narrative in speculative territory.
