Chinese actor Song Ningfeng has publicly apologised after confirming allegations of an extramarital relationship, bringing a days-long controversy to a head with a candid and unusually detailed statement. Writing on social media on 1 April, the actor acknowledged the situation in full, saying he would no longer deny or deflect responsibility and would instead face the consequences of his actions.

In a tone that veered between remorseful and resolute, Song Ningfeng admitted he had not slept for days and felt compelled to confront what he described as a serious personal failing.

He directed his apology first and foremost to his wife, Zhang Wanting, whom he said he had hurt the most, acknowledging that he had dismissed her concerns in the past—concerns he now recognises were justified.

He stated that his daughter was asleep in another room at the time, and announced that he will suspend all acting work indefinitely to seek professional psychological counselling.

He said he had undermined the sense of trust and stability within their family, calling it a mistake he would carry for life.

The actor also addressed the involvement of another woman, admitting he had concealed his marital status and made promises he could not keep. He insisted the responsibility lay entirely with him and rejected any attempt to shift blame.

In a further clarification, he denied circulating claims that his child had witnessed any of the events in question, stating the child had been in another room and unaware of the situation. Even so, he described himself as having failed in his role as a father due to the wider impact on his family.

His statement follows the circulation of leaked audio recordings and chat logs, which appeared to document conversations between Song Ningfeng and the woman involved.

In the recordings, a voice resembling the actor’s admits to initiating the relationship and later attempting to end it, while also expressing a desire to return to his family and raise his child with Zhang Wanting. The material quickly spread across social platforms, fuelling intense public scrutiny.

The fallout has been immediate. Song Ningfeng announced an indefinite suspension of all acting work and said he would seek professional psychological counselling.

He added that he would accept any decision made by his wife regarding their relationship, signalling a willingness to prioritise personal accountability over career considerations.

Some fans have criticised the actor’s actions and questioned the sincerity of his apology, arguing that the details only emerged after evidence surfaced publicly. Others have taken a more measured view, noting the directness of his statement and his decision to step back from the spotlight. Discussions have also centred on the broader pressures of public relationships, particularly for figures who have previously shared their marital struggles on reality programmes.

The case has reignited interest in Song Ningfeng and Zhang Wanting’s relationship history, which has long been under public scrutiny.

Their appearance on a relationship-focused show had already exposed tensions within their marriage, making the current situation feel, for some observers, like an extension of issues previously hinted at in the public eye.

What remains clear is that Song Ningfeng’s career is now on pause, with no indication of when or if he will return.

His statement closes with a request for the public to leave his family out of further discussion, insisting that all criticism should be directed solely at him. Whether that appeal will be respected in an online environment driven by constant commentary remains uncertain.

The final lines of his apology strike a notably definitive tone: he does not expect forgiveness, he says, but intends to spend the rest of his life taking responsibility and making amends. It is a statement that positions accountability at the centre of his next chapter, though public trust, once fractured, is rarely easily restored..

Is stepping away enough, or does real accountability demand something more?
