Thailand’s long-running The iCon Group controversy has taken a fresh and dramatic turn, with prosecutors formally moving ahead against two of the country’s best-known screen names, Min Pechaya and Sam Yuranunt

On 27 April at 9am local time, the Office of Special Litigation for Major Cases filed charges at the criminal court, pushing the entertainment-linked business scandal back into the spotlight. For anyone who thought this story had quietly packed its bags and gone home, apparently not.

The case centres on allegations tied to public fraud, computer-related offences, unlawful fundraising practices and operating an unauthorised direct-sales network.

Thai authorities had previously reviewed the matter, but after further objections and additional findings, prosecutors decided the case should proceed. In short: what once looked paused is now very much back on stage.

Both Min Pechaya and Sam Yuranunt had earlier requested a postponement for giving statements to prosecutors, delaying the next legal phase from its original March schedule. That postponement now appears to have only delayed the inevitable, with the file officially landing in court.

What makes the development especially notable is that earlier views from special prosecutors reportedly suggested there was not enough evidence to pursue the pair.

At the time, both stars were seen mainly as brand ambassadors promoting products rather than figures directly involved in recruitment or operations. It was a distinction that gave them breathing room. That breathing room has now disappeared.

Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation later challenged that earlier position, saying newer findings pointed to a larger role than simple endorsement work.

Investigators reportedly believe both celebrities received substantial payments and actively appeared at events that encouraged the public to join and invest. Prosecutors now appear convinced that celebrity influence may have carried real commercial weight.

Authorities also reportedly argued that the trust attached to recognisable public figures helped strengthen confidence in the platform, which is now widely scrutinised as an alleged pyramid-style money scheme.

In practical terms, investigators believe star power was not just decoration — it may have been part of the machine itself.

Min Pechaya addressed the public in a six-minute video ahead of the court step, saying she was shocked to be asked to prove herself again after previously being cleared at one stage.

She said she had cooperated with officials from the beginning and remains ready to continue doing so.

She also insisted she would not flee, saying her home, family and life are in Thailand. A fairly direct message, and one aimed at shutting down rumours before they start running laps online.

The actress also argued she had been grouped into periods of company activity that pre-dated her involvement.

In simple terms, her position is that if accusations are made, they should match the exact timeline of her work rather than cover years before she arrived. It is a legal argument many observers expect her defence team to lean on heavily.

Meanwhile, Sam Yuranunt has also been named in the filing, adding another major entertainment figure to a case already heavy with headlines. His side is expected to respond through the legal process as proceedings continue.

Public reaction has been sharply divided, as expected whenever fame meets court paperwork. Some online users say the case proves celebrity endorsements should carry greater responsibility, especially when money is involved.

Others argue appearing in adverts is not the same as running a business and say the court should separate marketing from management. And then there are those simply asking why every scandal somehow ends up longer than a prestige TV drama.

For Thailand’s entertainment industry, the wider impact could be significant. Brands often rely on actors and presenters to build trust quickly, but this case may force tougher questions about due diligence, contracts and how far a public face can be linked to company conduct. Endorsement deals may soon require more homework and fewer glossy smiles.

The criminal court process will now determine what evidence stands and what does not.

Until then, the names Min Pechaya, Sam Yuranunt and The iCon Group are likely to dominate Thai entertainment headlines for some time yet. What do you reckon — fair accountability or fame being used as the easiest target?
