Kawaguchi Haruna is not easing back into film—she is going all in. The actress returns to the big screen after seven years with a 10kg weight loss and a role rooted in a real-life story that already left half of Japan in tears long before cameras started rolling.
Set for release on 2 October 2026, Mama ga Mou Kono Sekai ni Inakutemo: Watashi no Inochi no Nikki adapts the diary of Nodoka Endo, written until just ten days before her passing.
Directed by Yuki Yamato, the film follows a 21-year-old woman diagnosed with stage IV colon, navigating love, marriage and the kind of decisions most people would rather not even imagine. It is not a fictional tearjerker—it is lived experience, documented in real time, now retold on screen.
For Kawaguchi, this is more than just a comeback lead since Until I Meet September’s Love. The actress underwent a physical transformation during the roughly two-month shoot, shedding 10kg to reflect the progression of illness on screen.
She described the process as committing “everything, physically and mentally,” which sounds dramatic until you realise the role itself demands exactly that. There is no room for half-measures when portraying someone whose life story is still fresh in public memory.
Co-starring Mahiro Takasugi as Nodoka’s husband Shoichi, the film also marks their first on-screen pairing. Takasugi steps into the role of a partner who promised never to leave, even as circumstances grew increasingly difficult.
The film leans heavily into that emotional core—love under pressure, choices that do not come with easy answers, and the quiet determination to keep going anyway.

The real-life story first reached a national audience when the couple’s wedding was featured on Waratte Koraete!, turning their journey into what many described as a “can’t-stop-crying” story. Since then, Nodoka Endo’s diary has resonated widely, not just as a personal record but as something that captures the raw, unfiltered reality of facing limited time.
Behind the scenes, Shoichi himself admitted the film adaptation felt surreal at first. Watching the finished product, however, he recognised the people, the moments, and the emotional connections as they were.
His reflection is simple but pointed—this is not just a story, it is proof that someone like Nodoka existed, loved, and lived fully within the time she had.
Early teaser visuals and footage are already setting the tone. A wedding scene, soft smiles, and then the abrupt shift—. It is a narrative pivot that does not waste time, mirroring how quickly life itself can change.
The tagline, “I want to be with you every second,” might sound familiar in romance films, but here it lands differently, carrying a weight that feels earned rather than scripted.
Fan and netizen reactions are already split in that very online way. Some are praising Kawaguchi Haruna’s commitment, calling the transformation “award-worthy” before the film has even premiered.
Others are cautiously optimistic, pointing out that adapting such a recent and personal story comes with expectations that go beyond performance.
A few are already bracing themselves emotionally, with comments along the lines of “not ready but will watch anyway,” which is probably the most honest preview any film could ask for.
There is also quiet curiosity around how far the film will go in portraying Nodoka’s final choices, including her decision to stop treatment and have a child.
It is the kind of narrative detail that pushes the story beyond conventional drama into something more reflective—and potentially more divisive.
Seven years is a long gap for a lead role, but Kawaguchi’s return is not playing it safe. If anything, she has picked one of the most demanding, emotionally loaded projects available. Whether audiences walk away moved, overwhelmed, or somewhere in between, the film is clearly aiming to leave a mark rather than simply fill a release slot.
And honestly, this one feels like it will spark conversations the moment it lands. Are you ready for it, or already emotionally preparing yourself?
