Joyce Byers has survived missing children, supernatural chaos, government nonsense and enough stress to power Hawkins for years, so fans were quick to ask one thing after watching Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 — where exactly is she?

The new animated Netflix spin-off drops viewers back into Hawkins between Seasons 2 and 3, reuniting the familiar gang for another run-in with creatures from the Upside Down. Nearly everyone turns up in some form, yet one of the franchise’s most iconic mums is nowhere to be seen.

The answer is less dramatic than fans hoped and more about storytelling choices than secret feuds or hidden plot twists. Tales From ‘85 is built around the younger characters, putting Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max and Will back at the centre of the action.

It deliberately mirrors the early spirit of Stranger Things, when the kids were uncovering terrifying mysteries while the adults were several steps behind and usually wondering why everyone looked so tired.

That child-focused approach means the grown-ups are mostly pushed to the sidelines. With episodes running around the half-hour mark, there is little room for separate adult storylines, emotional detours or Joyce storming into a room demanding answers — entertaining as that would be.

The series moves fast, and the priority is monster trouble, secret missions and the gang trying to fix everything before Hawkins notices another deeply suspicious week.

Even when adults do appear, their roles are brief and practical. Hopper shows up because Eleven is living under his roof and regularly treating curfews like optional advice. Karen Wheeler appears in classic mum mode, more concerned with lunch than interdimensional horror.

Jonathan Byers pops in early to hand Will a mixtape, then disappears before anyone can ask him to help fight monsters. In short, adults are present only when the plot needs them.

That leaves Joyce Byers as the notable casualty of the format. Because the story rarely heads to the Byers home and keeps Will operating with the group, there is no natural opening for Joyce to enter the narrative.

Realistically, she is probably at work, trying to earn a living while Hawkins once again forgets to mention the town is under siege. Typical Hawkins timing, really.

Fans online have had mixed reactions. Some viewers understand the tighter focus and say the series works best when centred on the original gang dynamic.

Others argue leaving out Joyce feels strange because she has long been one of the emotional engines of Stranger Things. A few joked that if she had appeared, the mystery would have been solved in one episode because Joyce always notices when something is off, unlike half the town.

There is also a wider reason her absence stands out so much: Joyce Byers is not a background parent in this universe. She is one of the people who repeatedly pushed the story forward, trusted her instincts and refused to ignore danger.

Removing that presence changes the feel of Hawkins, even if only temporarily. It is a reminder of how important the character became over the years.

Still, this is only one chapter of the Stranger Things world, and animated spin-offs often experiment with tone, pacing and perspective.

Tales From ‘85 appears to be choosing speed, nostalgia and youthful chaos over full ensemble drama. Whether that was the right move depends on how much you missed hearing Joyce shout someone’s name in panic.
