Bear Grylls has returned to television with a fresh title, a new network, and the same old promise: drop famous people into places where most viewers would refuse to spend five minutes.
Bear Grylls Is Running Wild premieres on Tuesday, 21 April, on Fox, with Matthew McConaughey fronting the opening episode as the survival expert once again drags celebrities into rough terrain for 48 hours of mud, nerves and suspiciously cheerful suffering.
The new series revives the spirit of the long-running Running Wild with Bear Grylls, which previously aired on NBC and National Geographic before going quiet.
Now Fox has picked it up, polished the name, and sent Grylls straight back into the wilderness with a fresh line-up of stars willing to test whether fame helps when hanging off cliffs. Spoiler: it does not.
This season promises some of the show’s harshest backdrops yet, including Norway’s glacial wilderness, the mountains of Eryri in Wales, Arctic rainforest, canyonlands and punishing desert terrain.
Fox says viewers can expect glacier crossings, canyon descents, risky extractions and even a freefall jump from 11,000 feet. Because apparently a quiet countryside walk was never considered.
The premiere sees Matthew McConaughey joining Grylls for the first adventure, a pairing that feels oddly perfect.
McConaughey has long carried the calm philosopher energy of a man who might happily discuss life while stranded on a mountain. Whether that mindset survives Grylls’ pace is another matter entirely.
