Prime Video’s crime drama Scarpetta splits its story across two eras, placing legendary forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta at the centre of a mystery that refuses to stay buried. In the present-day storyline, the character is played by Nicole Kidman, while the earlier timeline rewinds to 1998, when Scarpetta is still building her reputation and chasing a serial killer linked to multiple deaths. That younger version of the character is portrayed by British actress Rosy McEwen, a rising name in film and television whose career has steadily gained attention over the past few years.

The dual-timeline format means both performers carry the same character at different stages of life. While Nicole Kidman presents a seasoned investigator questioning past conclusions, Rosy McEwen brings the raw determination of Scarpetta’s earlier career, when the hunt for a serial offender defined the case that still echoes decades later.

For viewers unfamiliar with her work, Rosy McEwen may appear as a fresh face, but she has already built a strong reputation in British and international productions.

The London-born actress first gained major recognition for her lead role in the film Blue Jean, which earned her the British Independent Film Award for Best Lead Performance in 2022.

Her television credits include appearances in well-known series such as Black Mirror, The Alienist, and Close to Me. On the film side, McEwen has also featured in projects including Harvest, Apartment 7A, Rabbit Trap, and Vesper.

With Scarpetta, she now joins a high-profile ensemble alongside Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, adapting the long-running crime novels written by Patricia Cornwell.

McEwen’s path into acting began earlier than many might expect. As a student at an all-girls Catholic school in London, she was spotted during a casting search for the role of Briony in the film adaptation of Atonement.

She reportedly reached the final stage of auditions before the role ultimately went to Saoirse Ronan, who later received an Academy Award nomination for the performance. While the opportunity slipped away, the experience left a lasting impression and sparked McEwen’s interest in acting.

Despite that early brush with the film industry, she initially pursued a different academic path. After finishing school, McEwen enrolled at the University of Leeds, where she studied the history of art. Acting returned to the forefront during her final year when she applied to drama school alongside friends.

Her acceptance into the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School marked a turning point. From there, she went on to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in stage productions such as Timon of Athens and Tamburlaine.

In 2022, her performance as Desdemona in Othello at the Royal National Theatre drew strong critical praise, helping solidify her reputation as a serious stage performer before transitioning further into screen roles.

Why She Was Cast as the Younger Scarpetta

According to series creator Liz Sarnoff, casting McEwen was not simply about physical resemblance to Nicole Kidman. The creative team were also looking for someone who could mirror Kidman’s intensity and grounded approach to the character.

Sarnoff noted that both actors share a similar acting style, allowing the younger and older versions of Kay Scarpetta to feel like the same person at different points in life rather than two separate interpretations.

To prepare for the role, McEwen reportedly consulted a real forensic pathologist to better understand the professional world Scarpetta inhabits. She also collaborated with Nicole Kidman during development to align their portrayals, ensuring continuity between the 1998 and 2026 timelines.

The casting of Rosy McEwen has sparked varied reactions among viewers following early details about the series. Some fans have praised the decision, noting the clear physical resemblance and the serious acting background she brings to the role.

Others have expressed curiosity rather than criticism, pointing out that McEwen remains less widely known than some of her co-stars. For many viewers, Scarpetta may serve as their first introduction to her work.

Across social discussions, however, one point appears consistent: audiences are eager to see how convincingly the series connects the two timelines and whether McEwen’s portrayal captures the beginnings of the character that Nicole Kidman later embodies.

As anticipation builds for Prime Video’s adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling novels, the spotlight is increasingly shifting towards McEwen’s performance. Will her younger Scarpetta become one of the show’s breakout elements, or will viewers still see Nicole Kidman as the defining face of the character?
