Chinese actress Yang Zi has been drawn into a growing debate over artificial intelligence in entertainment after her likeness was reportedly used without permission in an AI-generated short drama.

The incident, which quickly spread across social platforms, has prompted a formal legal response from her management.

In a statement issued on 20 March, Yang Zi’s studio said unidentified parties had used AI face-swapping and deep synthesis technologies to create and distribute video content featuring her image without consent.

The studio described the act as a serious infringement on her legal rights and personal privacy, confirming that lawyers have been appointed to collect evidence and pursue accountability through the courts.

The content in question, linked to an AI short drama circulating online, has since been removed.

However, the speed at which the footage spread has intensified scrutiny around how emerging technologies are being used, particularly in cases involving public figures.

The studio’s response was direct.

It stressed that while AI has the potential to reshape creative industries, its use must remain within legal and ethical boundaries.

The message was clear: digital platforms do not operate outside the law, and misuse of technology carries consequences.

The case has quickly become part of a broader conversation.

AI-generated content, particularly face-swapping tools, has become increasingly accessible, blurring the line between creative experimentation and unauthorised replication.

For actors like Yang Zi, whose public image is closely tied to their professional work, the implications are significant.

Many fans have rallied in support of Yang Zi, calling for stricter protections and clearer enforcement against misuse of likeness.

There is a strong sense among supporters that incidents like this highlight a gap between technological capability and legal safeguards.

Others have taken a more measured view, pointing out that while AI innovation is inevitable, clearer guidelines are urgently needed to prevent misuse without stifling development.

The situation has also prompted renewed attention on the responsibilities of content creators and platforms.

For Yang Zi, the immediate priority is legal resolution.

So where should that line be drawn — and who should be responsible for enforcing it when digital identities can be replicated so easily?
