A towering black bird casually crossing a national highway in Jilin has jolted social media into a frenzy, with viewers split between disbelief and delight as the footage evokes scenes straight out of classic wuxia fiction.

Captured in Jingxin, Hunchun City, the clip shows the bird folding its wings and striding across the road with calm authority, forcing cars and motorbikes to halt in quiet submission.

The sighting, recorded by a driver surnamed Li along National Highway 302 near Jiushaping Village, quickly spread online.

In the video, the bird—nearly one metre tall—moves unhurriedly, seemingly unfazed by human presence.

Onlookers can be seen pausing to watch and take photos, while traffic remains still until the animal completes its crossing. According to Li, the encounter lasted only a few dozen seconds, yet its impact has proven far more enduring.

Authorities and local experts have since confirmed the bird as a vulture, locally known as “zuo shan diao” or “Mountain Eagle”, a first-class protected species in China.

Lin Wei, head of Jiushaping Village and a member of the local wildlife conservation association, noted that the species can grow up to 120 centimetres in length with a wingspan reaching two metres.

He explained that early spring conditions in the Jingxin wetlands—where frozen fish begin to decay—often attract scavengers, making sightings more likely during this period, though rarely at such close range.

The online reaction has been immediate and varied. Some viewers were stunned by the sheer scale of the bird, questioning whether the footage was staged or whether the creature could even be real.

Others leaned into humour, drawing comparisons to the legendary giant condor from The Return of the Condor Heroes, with one widely shared comment reading, “Yang Guo, your bird ran away.”

The reference struck a chord with fans of the genre, many recalling how the fictional condor served as both companion and symbol of strength in the story.

In that novel, the giant condor is depicted as an intelligent and loyal presence, forming a deep bond with the protagonist Yang Guo.

The character has long held cultural weight, particularly through the 2006 television adaptation starring Huang Xiaoming and Liu Yifei, which helped bring the story to a wider global audience.

The real-life sighting, while grounded in biology rather than fantasy, appears to have reignited that collective imagination.

Yet beyond the jokes and nostalgia, conservationists have used the moment to underline a more serious message. Lin Wei urged the public to maintain distance from such wildlife and avoid interference, stressing the bird’s protected status.

The unexpected proximity of the encounter, he added, should not encourage closer interaction but rather greater respect for natural habitats.

What remains striking is not just the bird’s size, but its composure—walking with what many online described as “presence”, almost theatrical in its pacing.

For locals accustomed to migratory birds passing through the wetlands, this was something altogether different: a fleeting but memorable disruption of the ordinary.

Was it simply a rare wildlife moment, or something that taps into deeper cultural memory? Either way, it has blurred the line between fiction and reality just enough to keep audiences watchin.. What do you reckon: pure coincidence, or a real-life echo of wuxia legend?
