A social media post by Cayla Zhang, the 16-year-old daughter of actress Christy Chung, has prompted a wave of online debate after a bathroom selfie unintentionally captured another person in the background.

The image, shared over the weekend, quickly drew attention not for the pose itself but for what appeared behind it—someone seated on a toilet, partially visible in the mirror reflection.

Initial speculation online suggested the individual could have been Cayla’s sister, which intensified criticism. Viewers questioned the lack of awareness and raised concerns over personal boundaries, with many arguing that the image should never have been posted given the setting.

Others also pointed out that Cayla appeared to adjust the photo to manage her own exposure while leaving the background unchanged, which added to the perception that privacy had not been fully considered.

The photo was swiftly removed, but discussion continued to build across platforms.

Some netizens took a more measured view, suggesting the situation may have been an oversight rather than intentional, particularly given Cayla’s age.

Others, however, maintained that the incident highlighted a broader issue around how casually personal spaces are sometimes shared online without full consideration of those present.

In a statement released on 23 March 2026, Christy Chung clarified that the person in the background was not her daughter Jaden, but a classmate.

She issued a direct apology to the individual and her family, acknowledging the distress caused and describing the situation as a lapse in judgement that should not have happened.

Christy Chung also placed responsibility on herself, stating that her own shortcomings in guidance contributed to the incident.

She noted that her schedule had limited the time she spent discussing boundaries and online conduct with her children, and confirmed that she has since addressed the matter directly with Cayla.

The actress emphasised that privacy and respect must come first, adding that the family will be more mindful moving forward.

Her full statement:

Hello everyone, I’m Christy Chung.

Recently, there has been a lot of attention and discussion surrounding me and my daughters. I have carefully read every comment and reflected deeply on them. Here, I would like to speak sincerely from the perspective of a mother.

I have been living in Beijing for over twenty years. I have long settled here, built my life, started a family, and raised my children. My daughters have also grown up and studied here since they were young. As a family, we deeply love this place and have fully integrated into life here.

As a mother, I must honestly admit that I have had many shortcomings and oversights in my children’s upbringing and education. Over the years, due to being busy with work, I have not spent enough time with them. I have not provided enough care, communication, or emotional support, and for this, I feel deeply guilty and remorseful.

Recently, due to Cayla’s carelessness when posting a photo, she unintentionally captured a classmate’s private moment, which caused considerable distress and discomfort to the classmate and their family. I am truly very sorry and deeply apologetic.

I would like to clarify here: the person in the photo is a classmate, not Jaden. I hope everyone will stop spreading this information and refrain from further rumours.

The child is still young and did not fully understand boundaries. However, this reflects a lack of proper guidance and supervision on our part as parents, and the responsibility lies entirely with us. We have already deleted the photo immediately and have had a serious conversation with her, emphasising the importance of privacy and respect. We will certainly be more careful in the future.

Once again, I sincerely apologise to the affected classmate and their family. I also kindly ask everyone, for the sake of protecting a minor, not to continue sharing the related image.

Going forward, I will listen to my children more patiently and attentively, pay closer attention to their emotional well-being, and give them a stronger sense of security and companionship.

Thank you again for your concern, reminders, and understanding. I will strive to become a more responsible and attentive mother, and continue learning and growing alongside other parents on this journey.

Thank you everyone.

Public reaction to the apology has been varied but largely accepting. While some continue to stress the importance of accountability, others have acknowledged the swift response and the willingness to address the issue openly.

Do you think situations like this are simply part of growing up online, or should expectations be higher when it comes to privacy in shared spaces?
