Chinese historical drama Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) places political manoeuvring and uneasy alliances at the centre of its story, following a marriage of convenience that slowly turns into something deeper while the empire around it shifts with intrigue and factional rivalry. Adapted from the novel Zhu Yu by Tuan Zi Lai Xi, the series blends romance with a dense political storyline that stretches back more than a decade before the events of the drama.
The narrative begins with butcher’s daughter Fan Changyu, played by Tian Xiwei, entering a pragmatic marriage with disgraced nobleman Xie Zheng, portrayed by Zhang Linghe. What starts as a mutually beneficial arrangement gradually evolves into genuine partnership as both characters confront the political secrets surrounding the empire of Great Yin.
The wider cast anchors the court intrigue and personal relationships driving the drama. Snow Kong appears as Yu Qian Qian, Deng Kai plays Qi Min, the headmaster of Liu Yuan Academy, Ren Hao takes the role of Li Huai An, while Yan Yi Kuan portrays the influential prime minister Wei Yan.

The political tension in Pursuit of Jade traces back to the Jinzhou battle sixteen years earlier, a military disaster that resulted in the death of Crown Prince Chengde and permanently altered the balance of power inside the Great Yin court.

As an adult he was sent to command forces along the empire’s northwestern frontier, where he suppressed threats including the rebellion led by Prince Changxin. His reputation as a decisive commander made him a key asset to the Wei political network.
Yet the Jinzhou defeat continues to haunt the empire. Official records blame delayed reinforcements and supply failures, but Xie Zheng suspects something more deliberate. His investigation into the events of sixteen years earlier begins to expose cracks within the imperial system.
The search for truth triggers a new struggle for power when Xie Zheng is attacked and left incapacitated. With the frontier army temporarily leaderless, Wei Yan’s son Wei Xuan attempts to claim command of the troops, backed by General He Jingyuan, another figure aligned with the Wei faction.
At the same time, the threat from rebel Prince Changxin has not disappeared. Without Xie Zheng’s leadership, the empire’s border forces may struggle to contain another uprising.
The story also introduces a rival political camp, the Li faction, historically opposed to Wei Yan’s influence. Unexpectedly, Grand Tutor Li publicly supports Xie Zheng during a court debate, hinting that the imperial political landscape is far less predictable than it first appears.
His grandson Li Huai An becomes an important figure in this shifting balance. Although he technically serves under the Wei faction’s military command, his actions suggest divided loyalties.
He quietly helps shield the Fan sisters from Wei Yan’s political reach, adding another layer of complexity to the court’s factional web.

Li Huai An / Wen Kan — played by Ren Hao
Li Huai An occupies one of the drama’s most complex positions. Acting as a protector figure for Fan Chang Yu while serving within a rival faction, he becomes emotionally entangled despite being formally engaged to another woman.
Shi Hu
Shi Hu, the emperor’s half sibling, is engaged to Li Huai An due to family expectations. Yet her attention lies elsewhere, particularly toward Gongsun Yin, complicating the emotional landscape surrounding the characters.
Gongsun Yin
As headmaster of Liu Yuan Academy, Gongsun Yin holds both academic and political influence. He shares a strong bond of loyalty with Xie Zheng and acts as a stabilising figure in the narrative.
Wei Yan — played by Yan Yi Kuan
Prime Minister Wei Yan stands at the centre of the empire’s political machinery. As Xie Zheng’s maternal uncle and former patron, their relationship blends family obligation with power hierarchy.
Emperor Qi Sheng — played by Guan Yun Peng
The emperor presides over the empire but must balance competing factions inside the court, particularly the rivalry between the Wei and Li political camps.
