Hong Kong cinema has a fresh Lunar New Year juggernaut. Comedy heavyweight Dayo Wong and Cantopop icon Sammi Cheng are leading the charge with Night King (夜王), a holiday comedy that has surged past HK$82 million at the box office since opening on 17 February, placing it among the five highest-grossing domestic films in Hong Kong history.

Directed by Jack Ng, the filmmaker behind the billion-dollar hit A Guilty Conscience, the film has quickly become the season’s defining cinema event. Within days of release, Night King not only topped holiday ticket sales but also rewrote several local records, including the biggest opening for a Lunar New Year film and the highest single-day earnings for the festive slot.

The film’s early momentum was striking. Opening day takings crossed HK$11 million, while more than 900 screenings were scheduled across Hong Kong cinemas — the busiest holiday rollout in nearly a decade.

The strong turnout has reinforced Dayo Wong’s reputation as a reliable box-office draw, with audiences once again turning up in large numbers for his sharp comic style.

International interest has followed quickly.

The film has already expanded beyond Hong Kong, with preview screenings and theatrical runs across Malaysia, North America, the United Kingdom and several European cities. In Malaysia alone, the film approached RM3 million within four days of release.

Meanwhile, more than 120 theatres across the United States and Canada joined the rollout, marking one of the widest North American openings for a Hong Kong Lunar New Year release.

Director Jack Ng said the response has been both overwhelming and encouraging.

He noted that online reviews and audience comments have been pouring in since the premiere, adding that he hopes viewers leave the cinema with a sense of determination and courage heading into the Year of the Horse.

Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng Deliver One of Hong Kong’s Biggest Holiday Hits with Night King

For Sammi Cheng, the film marks another memorable collaboration with Dayo Wong. After weeks of intense promotional activity, the singer-actress spent the holiday period quietly watching the film with family members.

She later shared that the journey from filming to the packed promotional schedule remains vivid in her mind, describing the project as a collective effort from cast and crew.

The ensemble cast has also celebrated the film’s rapid success. Fish Liew, who plays the character Mimi, revealed that fans are already asking whether a sequel could be on the cards.

According to her, audience reactions during theatre visits have been enthusiastic, with many viewers expressing hopes that the same cast might reunite for another story in the future.

Actor Siuyea Lo said the demanding shoot now feels worthwhile after seeing the audience response.

Fellow cast members including Renci Yeung, Mandy Tam, Sumling Lee and Hazel Lam also shared their excitement online, posting short thank-you videos to fans who turned up to support the film.

One of the most talked-about performances comes from newcomer Kay Choi, a stage actress who plays Kwai Fong.

Her performance has drawn media attention and sparked online searches from curious viewers eager to learn more about the rising talent.

Choi credited director Jack Ng, producer Ivy Ho and the publicity team for giving her the opportunity, describing the role as an important milestone in her career.

Beyond its comedy, Night King has resonated with viewers for its underlying message about resilience and reinvention — themes many fans say reflect Hong Kong’s own spirit.

Social media discussions suggest audiences appreciate the film’s mix of humour, emotion and local flavour.

Online reactions have been lively. Some viewers praise the chemistry between Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng, calling the pairing one of the most entertaining screen partnerships of the year.

Others highlight the ensemble cast and the film’s balance of laughs and heartfelt moments.

A smaller group of netizens say the hype has raised expectations, leading to debate about whether the film’s success will push Hong Kong studios to revive more large-scale holiday comedies.

With global screenings continuing and strong word-of-mouth building, industry watchers believe Night King could climb even higher in the all-time box-office rankings if momentum holds.

Have you already watched Night King in cinemas? Do you think the film deserves its record-breaking run, and would you be interested in seeing the same cast return for a sequel?
