Suganami Mirei of the 12-member J-pop group ≠ME (Not Equal ME) has entered an indefinite hiatus, the group’s management confirmed on 28 March 2026, issuing a brief statement through its official website and social platforms that offered no explicit reason for her withdrawal.

The announcement stated that Suganami Mirei (26) would “take a break for a while effective immediately”, without clarifying duration or cause.

The timing, however, comes as images alleged to show Mirei alongside a man have circulated widely online over the past week, prompting intense discussion among fans in Japan.

No formal link between the hiatus and the speculation has been confirmed..

Management also addressed upcoming activities, noting that the group’s ≠ME Arena Tour 2026, scheduled to begin on 4 May, will proceed with provisions for ticket refunds for those who wish to cancel.

Further details regarding Mirei’s participation in previously scheduled promotional events — including the 11th single “Haitateki Fighter” release event on 12 April and anniversary-related activities in May and June — will be announced at a later date.

Formed in 2019 and produced by Rino Sashihara, ≠ME has steadily built a strong commercial presence since its major debut in April 2021.

Within the group, Suganami Mirei has been positioned as a central figure, balancing idol activities with work as a regular model for fashion magazine bis, contributing to her visibility beyond the music scene.

While management’s statement remained procedural in tone, the lack of explanation has intensified scrutiny.

In Japan’s idol industry, where unwritten expectations around personal image remain influential, hiatus announcements are often interpreted by fans as part of internal review processes.

The concept of a “no dating” culture, though rarely codified publicly, continues to shape fan expectations and commercial dynamics.

A portion of fans expressed disappointment, citing concerns over trust and the perceived breach of idol-fan dynamics, while others urged restraint, pointing to the absence of verified information and calling for privacy.

The discourse has largely unfolded across Japanese social platforms, where debate has centred on whether such expectations remain relevant in a shifting entertainment landscape.

As of now, Suganami Mirei has not issued a personal statement addressing either her hiatus or the circulating claims. The silence has left space for speculation to continue, even as some fans advocate for a clearer, direct communication from the idol herself.

The situation places ≠ME at a delicate intersection between maintaining its commercial structure and responding to evolving audience attitudes.

For management, the immediate priority appears to be operational continuity, with scheduled events moving forward and logistical adjustments in place.

For fans, however, the unanswered questions linger. Whether this marks a temporary pause or signals a more complex development will likely depend on what comes next — and whether either Mirei or the agency chooses to address the issue more directly.

What do you make of this situation — is this a standard industry move, or does it reflect deeper pressures within idol culture today?
