The latest episode of the Chinese costume romance drama Pursuit of Jade has put a new name firmly on viewers’ radar. The arrival of Yu Qianqian, played by Snow Kong (Kong Xueer), quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the series, with the Weibo hashtag “孔雪儿 真天使投资人” – translating roughly to “Kong Xueer is truly an angel investor” – trending nationwide soon after the episode aired.

Yu Qianqian enters the story with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how to navigate both commerce and people. Calm, sharp-eyed and composed, she is introduced as a capable businesswoman who forms a partnership with the drama’s main character Fan Changyu

Their collaboration in the braised meat trade is handled with surprising openness: Yu Qianqian offers daily wages and even an advance payment as a gesture of trust.

For many viewers, the move cemented her image as the drama’s “angel investor” figure.

The moment spread quickly across Chinese social media.

Clips of Yu Qianqian calmly negotiating business arrangements circulated widely, with viewers praising the character’s mixture of intelligence and warmth.

Many netizens described her as a refreshing presence in a historical drama landscape often dominated by palace intrigue and political scheming.

Online reactions, however, have not been entirely uniform.

A large number of fans applauded Kong Xueer for delivering a poised and understated performance, arguing that Yu Qianqian adds balance to the drama’s heavier storylines.

Others focused on the character’s sharp dialogue and business acumen, saying she brings a rare sense of practicality to the narrative.

A smaller group of viewers expressed curiosity about how the drama will expand her storyline, particularly given her complicated ties to the central characters. Some netizens also noted that Yu Qianqian’s presence hints at deeper emotional conflicts yet to unfold.

Yu Qianqian is a fictional character in Pursuit of Jade, portrayed by Kong Xueer, whose casting was officially confirmed in December 2024 when the production announced its principal lineup.

Why Yu Qianqian Is the Most Talked-About Character in Pursuit of Jade

The drama follows Fan Changyu, a young woman from a butcher family, and Xie Zheng, a disgraced nobleman.

Their marriage begins as a practical arrangement but gradually evolves into something deeper while the pair navigate wartime tensions and long-standing grudges.

Produced by Zhejiang Dongyang Haohan Film & Television Entertainment together with iQIYI Pictures and Tencent Video Culture Communication, the series blends romance, commerce and political rivalry in a sprawling historical setting.

Yu Qianqian’s character plays a key supporting role within that world.

In the drama’s narrative, she is portrayed as a merchant family daughter from the southern regions, known for her independence and strong sense of fairness.

While her partnership with Fan Changyu highlights her business instincts, her personal storyline becomes far more complicated through her connection with Prince Qi Min, played by Deng Kai.

Their relationship forms one of the drama’s most intense secondary storylines.

Prince Qi Min is ambitious and fiercely possessive, driven by his determination to secure power.

Yu Qianqian, meanwhile, resists being drawn into his ambitions, creating a relationship marked by emotional conflict and shifting loyalties.

According to the original novel source, the pair’s story ultimately takes a tragic turn.

After Prince Qi Min’s pursuit of the throne collapses and his allies abandon him, Yu Qianqian delivers poison to him herself, bringing an end to their turbulent bond.

The aftermath reshapes her life entirely.

Rather than entering another relationship, Yu Qianqian chooses independence, leaving the capital behind and forging a path of her own away from political intrigue and romantic entanglements.

The source novel The Marquis’s Wife and the Butcher’s Knife contains an additional twist absent from many drama discussions.

Near the end of the story, Yu Qianqian reveals to Fan Changyu that she is a time traveller.

She hints that in her lifetime there existed a celebrated female general remembered as one of the kingdom’s founders.

However, the narrative never specifies the era she originally came from, and the detail ultimately plays only a minor role in the wider plot.

For now, viewers remain focused on what the drama itself will reveal next. Whether Yu Qianqian’s storyline follows the novel closely or takes a different direction remains an open question.

What do you think of Kong Xueer’s portrayal of Yu Qianqian in Pursuit of Jade so far? Is she the drama’s most compelling new character, or are there bigger surprises still ahead?
