Chinese actress Dong Jie has reopened discussion around her highly publicised split from former husband Pan Yueming, acknowledging in a recent interview that she had been “willful back then”. The comment, brief but striking, has reignited scrutiny of one of the Chinese entertainment industry’s most controversial celebrity divorces.
Soon after the interview circulated online, Pan Yueming appeared to respond with a short but pointed message on Weibo. “Do you really have to be this pragmatic?” the 51-year-old actor wrote.
While he did not mention Dong Jie directly, the timing of the post quickly drew attention from fans and commentators who interpreted it as a subtle reaction.

The relationship between Dong Jie and Pan Yueming once appeared to be one of the most admired marriages among Chinese television stars.
The pair met in 2005 while working together and their relationship developed quickly. They married in 2008 and welcomed their son, Dingding, the following year.
At the height of their marriage, Pan Yueming publicly described Dong Jie as “the best wife”. When the actor was seriously injured in a car accident in 2009, she reportedly stayed by his side during recovery, reinforcing the public image of a devoted couple.
But the narrative shifted dramatically in October 2012. Dong Jie’s studio released a statement accusing Pan Yueming of gambling addiction, heavy debt and aggressive behaviour.

The story took another unexpected turn in March 2013 when paparazzo Zhuo Wei released footage showing Dong Jie kissing actor Wang Dazhi, who was married at the time.

The video emerged before Dong Jie had officially finalised her divorce, prompting a sharp reversal in public opinion. Online discussion quickly shifted, and the actress faced heavy criticism.
After the divorce, Dong Jie gained custody of their son. Reports at the time suggested that Pan Yueming had limited contact with the child for many years.
During that period, the actor’s social media presence became notable for a single recurring post each year — a birthday message dedicated to Dingding.
The silence between the two actors lasted more than a decade. Only in 2023 did signs of reconciliation appear when both parents interacted online while celebrating their son’s birthday. The brief exchange was widely seen by fans as evidence that tensions had softened.

Pan Yueming eventually rebuilt his reputation with the crime thriller Day and Night and later achieved renewed popularity through the Candle in the Tomb adventure drama franchise. His performances helped re-establish him as a respected television lead.
Dong Jie, meanwhile, gradually stepped back from mainstream drama projects and has more recently become active in livestream e-commerce, a growing sector in China’s online retail industry.

Meanwhile, a smaller group of viewers suggested that both actors had moved on and that revisiting the events more than a decade later serves little purpose.
The debate highlights how strongly audiences still remember the saga, despite the passage of time and the actors’ changing careers.
Whether Pan Yueming’s cryptic message was meant as a response remains unclear. Yet the renewed attention shows that the story continues to resonate with fans who followed the couple from their early romance to their highly publicised split.
