A new Chinese drama project is already stirring discussion across drama circles after reports emerged that Yu Shuxin and Ao Ruipeng are being lined up as the central pairing in the upcoming romantic suspense series The Leading Stars (许你星河千里).
The project, reportedly backed by streaming platform iQIYI, is preparing to begin filming in May 2026 and is expected to blend large-scale rescue missions, mystery and slow-burn romance against the dramatic landscapes of north-western China.
Tentatively planned as a roughly 30–36 episode production, The Leading Stars places its story in extreme terrain across Xinjiang and Gansu, regions known for their vast deserts, rugged mountains and remote wilderness.
Those locations are expected to play a major visual role in the series, shaping the drama’s adventurous tone and survival-driven narrative.
The project is being assembled by an experienced production team. Wang Xiaohui is attached as executive producer, while the script is written by Fu Liye.
Creative direction on the artistic side will be overseen by Chen Chao, and casting responsibilities are handled by Lin Shuo. The drama is adapted from the novel Xu Ni Xing He Qian Li by Tao Tao Yi Lun.
If confirmed, the drama would mark a fresh pairing between Yu Shuxin, known for her energetic screen presence in modern and costume romances, and Ao Ruipeng, who has gradually built recognition through historical and fantasy projects.
Their rumoured collaboration has already sparked curiosity among viewers eager to see how their contrasting styles might translate into a high-stakes adventure drama.
The Leading Stars centres on Ba Yunye, the fearless leader of an off-road expedition team, and Diao Zhuo, the disciplined captain of a charity search-and-rescue unit.
Their paths cross during a demanding rescue operation in an uninhabited region in north-west China. What begins as a professional partnership quickly becomes a test of endurance as the two teams tackle extreme terrain, dangerous missions and unpredictable natural conditions.
But the operation also uncovers a disturbing connection to the past.
The body discovered during the rescue is linked to a car accident that occurred sixteen years earlier. The victims of that accident were Ba Yunye’s sister and Diao Zhuo’s father, both members of a geological research team.
The revelation forces the two reluctant allies into a deeper investigation. Following clues left behind by their relatives, Ba Yunye and Diao Zhuo begin retracing a mystery buried for over a decade—one that may reshape everything they thought they knew about their families and their own futures.
Along the way, the pair move from uneasy partners to trusted companions. Yet the deeper they dig into the past, the more complicated their relationship becomes.

The rumoured casting of Yu Shuxin and Ao Ruipeng has triggered lively discussion across online drama communities. Some viewers welcomed the pairing, saying the combination of Yu Shuxin’s lively charisma and Ao Ruipeng’s steadier screen presence could create an engaging dynamic, particularly in a story built around teamwork and survival.
Others are intrigued by the drama’s setting. Many comments highlight the rarely used landscapes of Xinjiang and Gansu, with fans hoping the production will deliver cinematic visuals similar to recent adventure-themed Chinese dramas.
There are also cautious voices.
A few viewers pointed out that rescue-themed dramas rely heavily on strong writing and realistic tension, meaning the success of the project will depend on whether the script can balance romance with mystery and action.
Still, curiosity appears to outweigh hesitation. With a novel-based storyline, a large-scale outdoor setting and two rising actors attached, The Leading Stars is already appearing on watchlists long before filming has officially begun. For now, the casting remains unconfirmed, but the early buzz suggests the project could become one of the more talked-about drama productions heading into 2026.
What do you think about the rumoured pairing of Yu Shuxin and Ao Ruipeng? Would this adventurous mystery romance make it onto your watchlist?
