Short drama Seeds of Scarlet Longing (在你眉梢种红豆), starring Zhao Qing and Zheng Yecheng, premiered on 26 February and immediately claimed the top spot on Maoyan's short drama popularity chart on its very first day. Yunhe data confirmed the series pulled in a 10.1 percent effective market share on premiere day, placing third among all short dramas airing concurrently. For a production that went into release with minimal promotional push and an on-screen pairing that many doubted from the outset, that is quite the statement of an opening.

The drama leans into Chinese folklore with a fantasy romance premise that sets itself well apart from the usual period drama fare. Zheng Yecheng plays Shen Miu, a cold and commanding court official who has lived his entire life seeing the world in black and white, quite literally. That changes when Zhao Qing's character, Liang Jiangzhu, a descendant of a mysterious ancient clan, plants a love gu into him as a last-ditch effort to save her own life.

In Chinese folklore tradition, a gu is a form of mystical curse or ancient binding force, often depicted as something that links two people together at a deeply physical and emotional level. Liang Jiangzhu, suffering from a rare condition that will end her life if she does not find a partner before turning 18, finds herself choosing Shen Miu of all people, the very official who has been hunting her down.

From that moment on, she becomes the sole source of colour in his otherwise colourless world, a concept that viewers have latched onto quickly as one of the most quietly poetic romantic setups seen in a Chinese short drama in some time.

What has genuinely impressed viewers is how the drama sidesteps the tired back-and-forth misunderstanding structure that tends to drag romance dramas out unnecessarily. When Liang Jiangzhu plants the gu, she instructs Shen Miu not to harm her, and crucially, not to harm himself either.

The result is that any attempt by Shen Miu to strike or overpower Liang Jiangzhu physically rebounds on him instead. His own body moves to shield her instinctively, which creates a push-and-pull dynamic rooted in supernatural compulsion rather than contrived plot misreads. Fans have noted this as a refreshing and more dramatically satisfying way to build tension between leads.

One moment from the early episodes that sent social media into a spin is the scene in which Liang Jiangzhu kisses Shen Miu on the neck as part of the gu ritual.

The two are far from settled in their relationship at this point, but the charged tension packed into that single scene has become arguably the most discussed clip from the series since it dropped. Viewers have described it as bold, unexpected, and exactly the sort of moment that reminds you short dramas do not have to sacrifice impact for runtime.

The production's costume and styling choices have drawn nearly as much attention as the plot itself. Zhao Qing in her signature red robes has been widely praised, with many fans saying she carries an almost otherworldly elegance in that look.

Zheng Yecheng's high ponytail and short fringe styling has also gone down extremely well, giving his character a composed yet quietly dangerous edge that fits Shen Miu's personality to the letter. Both leads, who were not particularly considered visual standouts before this project, have seen their profiles shift considerably on the back of this production alone.

Reactions across Chinese social platforms have been notably enthusiastic, though the conversation has split into a few different camps. A large portion of viewers have focused on the central romance concept, calling the idea of Shen Miu only perceiving colour through Liang Jiangzhu one of the most romantically compelling setups in recent memory. Comments along the lines of "this is the destined pairing concept done properly" have been circulating widely.

Another vocal section of the audience has zeroed in on the visuals, with Zhao Qing in particular receiving a wave of praise that many are comparing to the attention she got during her breakthrough in The Immortal Ascension.

Some netizens who admitted they tuned in without high expectations have posted that they ended up finishing available episodes in one sitting.

There is also a smaller but equally engaged group specifically discussing the chemistry between Zhao Qing and Zheng Yecheng, noting that for a pairing that generated very little pre-release buzz, the two have a natural on-screen dynamic that feels far more developed than a first-time collaboration typically does.

The phrase "dark horse of 2026" has been attached to this drama repeatedly across multiple platforms, and given the numbers it pulled on premiere day without significant marketing support, it is a label that is becoming harder to argue with.

Zhao Qing first broke through to wider audiences with her role in The Immortal Ascension alongside Yang Yang, a performance she reportedly prepared for by losing seven kilograms.

That role shifted her from a relatively low-profile actress into a recognised leading lady almost overnight. Seeds of Scarlet Longing now marks her next step in consolidating that position, and the early reception suggests she is doing exactly that. With additional projects already lined up, including the upcoming drama Jin Wu Bu Jin, her momentum heading through the year looks considerable.

Seeds of Scarlet Longing runs to 24 episodes at approximately 20 minutes each, a format that sits at the shorter end even by short drama standards. What it demonstrates, though, is that tight pacing and a well-constructed premise can generate the same level of viewer investment and conversation that longer productions spend far more time and money trying to achieve. The numbers from Maoyan and Yunhe on day one back that up.

Whether you are already watching or still deciding, this is one worth paying attention to. Which element of Seeds of Scarlet Longing has caught your attention the most, the storyline, the chemistry, or the visuals?
