A court judgment related to a lawsuit involving Cheng Yi has unexpectedly triggered a fresh debate across Chinese social media, after a circulated document appeared to raise questions about the actor’s birth year. What began as a legal update quickly turned into a viral discussion about whether the widely accepted timeline of the star’s age is entirely accurate.

The issue intensified when Liang Ting, Cheng Yi’s former manager, publicly addressed the speculation. In a social media post, she confirmed that the actor’s age had indeed been adjusted at one point in official records. However, she stressed that the change occurred during his childhood and was connected to school enrolment rather than any later decision made in the entertainment industry.

According to Liang Ting, Cheng Yi’s family reported his age as one year older so he could begin school earlier.

She explained that as a child he appeared slightly taller than his peers, which prompted the family to register him with a birth year that would allow earlier admission.

When Cheng Yi later entered the acting industry, Liang Ting said she believed it was more appropriate to restore his real age in public information.

That decision, she acknowledged, eventually created inconsistencies between earlier records and later profiles.

She reiterated that Cheng Yi is still widely regarded as being born in 1990, and that the discrepancy stemmed from earlier household registration practices.

The explanation, however, has not fully calmed the conversation online.

Across comment sections and entertainment forums, reactions from fans and netizens have varied sharply. Some supporters argued that small discrepancies in childhood registration are not unusual and do not affect the actor’s professional achievements.

They say the renewed focus on a single number says more about online speculation culture than about Cheng Yi himself.

Other internet users remain sceptical. Several questioned whether school admission rules at the time would have required such an adjustment, suggesting the reasoning does not fully clarify the timeline.

Some even revisited old school photographs believed to show Cheng Yi with classmates, analysing whether he actually appeared noticeably taller.

Another topic circulating online concerns Cheng Yi’s family background. A number of netizens speculated that if the actor were born in 1990, it could mean he shares the same birth year as his younger sister, a detail that some commentators found unusual and began discussing across forums.

The conversation also turned toward fan reactions during the early stage of the controversy. Before Liang Ting’s statement appeared, some fans had insisted the circulating court document was edited or misleading.

After the former manager confirmed that an age adjustment once existed, critics argued that the statement contradicted those earlier claims.

Liang Ting also added a remark that quickly spread online: fame itself often invites scrutiny. Her comment suggested that intense attention toward a single detail, such as a birth year, reflects the level of visibility an actor has reached in the industry.

For Cheng Yi, whose recent dramas have drawn strong audience interest, the discussion has unfolded against the backdrop of a steadily rising career.

Supporters argue that the focus should remain on performances rather than personal details. Critics, meanwhile, continue to debate whether public records surrounding celebrities should remain fully transparent once they become widely known figures.

What do you think about the situation surrounding Cheng Yi’s age discussion? Does a single year really matter in the long run, or has the online reaction grown larger than the issue itself?
