Shiratori Sari, a member of AKB48, announced her graduation from the group on 5 March 2026 during the theatre performance of the “Te wo Tsunaginagara” stage. The 15-year-old idol confirmed she will leave the long-running Japanese pop group around May 2026, explaining that continuing idol activities while focusing on her education had become increasingly difficult.

The announcement quickly drew attention among fans who had followed the young idol’s short but promising career.

Many noted that Shiratori Sari had only recently been promoted from trainee status, making the decision feel sudden despite the practical reasons behind it.

In her statement, Shiratori Sari reflected on the two years she spent in the group after joining at just 13 as part of AKB48’s 19th generation

She said the experience brought valuable lessons and memories, even though balancing schoolwork and idol activities was not always easy.

According to her message, the challenge grew stronger after entering high school.

She admitted she had been thinking about graduation since last year, questioning whether she could continue performing at a level that met fans’ expectations while keeping up with academic demands.

“AKB48 became a place where I belonged,” she said in her message.

“But while trying to balance school, I started to worry whether I could meet everyone’s expectations. After thinking deeply about it, I made this decision.”

She also expressed gratitude to the seniors she admired, her fellow 19th generation members, and younger trainees who supported her during difficult moments.

The young idol thanked staff members and fans who came to see her performances, saying their encouragement gave her strength throughout her time in the group.

Shiratori Sari plans to remain active in AKB48 until around May, with her final schedule still to be confirmed.

For now, she is expected to participate in several upcoming events including the AKB48 Spring Concert 2026 at Yoyogi National Gymnasium from 3 to 5 April, along with multiple handshake events and online fan talk sessions scheduled through March and April.

Born on 10 September 2010 in Tokyo, Shiratori Sari joined AKB48 as a kenkyuusei trainee on 17 March 2024 before being promoted to regular member status on 4 December 2025. Known by the nickname Sarii, the Virgo idol stands about 160 cm tall and has spent nearly two years in the group under agency DH.

Her departure may seem early in the context of idol careers, but graduation itself remains a routine part of the 48 Group system, where members often move on to new pursuits or step away from entertainment altogether.

In Shiratori Sari’s case, the focus appears clear: prioritising school during a crucial stage of her education.

Fan reactions have been mixed across social media and idol forums. Some supporters expressed disappointment, arguing that Shiratori Sari was beginning to gain attention and could have grown further within the group.

Others, however, voiced support for her decision, noting that balancing school life and idol schedules at such a young age can be overwhelming.

A number of fans also pointed out that while she had been promoted to regular member, Shiratori Sari had yet to secure a senbatsu spot or consistent theatre presence, making her choice to concentrate on studies understandable.

For now, the young idol says she hopes to spend the remaining weeks creating final memories with fans before her departure. She promised to give her best until the very last stage and asked supporters to watch over her journey warmly.

What do you think about Shiratori Sari’s decision to graduate so early from AKB48? Was it the right move to focus on education, or do you think she still had untapped potential in the group?
