Meanwhile, Ove becomes involved in a local conflict when corporate officials — nicknamed “the Whiteshirts” — attempt to force his old friend Rune into a nursing home. Rune, now paralysed after a stroke, once had a bitter falling out with Ove over trivial matters, including their fierce loyalty to different car brands.
But when Ove learns what is happening, he puts aside the old grudge and leads the neighbourhood in opposing the officials.
With help from journalist Lena, evidence of the officials’ misconduct becomes public, forcing them to retreat. Rune is allowed to stay home, and the two old friends quietly reconcile.
