Hong Kong singer Gigi Yim Ming-hay is stepping into the Year of the Horse with a surprisingly personal wish — she wants to try dating. As she officially enters her 20s and returns to the spotlight with renewed energy, the young vocalist is not only planning musical reinvention but also hoping for a little romance to shake things up.
The singer, who recently re-focused on her music career, shared in an interview that this year feels different. Turning twenty has shifted her mindset. Beyond experimenting with new musical styles and collaborating with more senior artistes, she openly admitted she hopes her “romance star” will shine in the coming year.
“I’ve always wanted to try that feeling,” she said honestly. “But most people around me are seniors or colleagues. I hope to experience something different, so I can express myself differently in my work.”
In the past, Gigi Yim revealed that many of her compositions were inspired by novels and pure imagination. While creative, she felt something was missing.
“It didn’t feel very real,” she explained. “If I had the chance to date, I believe that feeling would be the most real. Then everyone would finally feel that Gigi Yim is different.”
It’s a refreshingly candid confession from the usually reserved singer. She even joked that if she ever went public with a relationship, she might have to balance things carefully so fans don’t feel jealous. Laughing, she hinted she would try her best to play the “good girl” role and keep everything harmonious.

This Lunar New Year also marked another milestone — Gigi Yim has set up her own studio, effectively becoming her own boss. Handing out red packets to staff was a new experience for her.
She admitted she had to consult elders on how much to prepare before settling on a safe middle number. “I need to make sure my wallet survives too,” she joked.
Despite her calm public image, she shared that visiting elders during the festive season can be a little nerve-wracking. As an introvert, going around greeting everyone one by one isn’t exactly her comfort zone. Still, she values tradition and makes the effort.
Interestingly, she rarely faces pressure about relationships during family visits. “They hardly ask if I’m dating, getting married, or how much I earn,” she said. For her, questions about love are not a major stress point — it’s more of a personal curiosity than outside pressure.
Professionally, Gigi Yim has big plans. She wants to experiment with different genres, work with more senior singers, and collaborate beyond her immediate circle. She believes every collaboration is a learning opportunity and also makes performing less lonely.
“Sometimes standing on stage alone feels a bit solitary,” she admitted. “It’s happier when everyone plays together.”
She even expressed interest in challenging platforms like The First Take, describing her new song “Wind Journey” as a travel handbook filled with memories.
Although she feels slightly nervous about such high-pressure live recordings, she believes preparation is key — even if those around her tease her about when she’ll ever feel “ready”.
Reactions online have been mixed but lively. Some fans are fully supportive, saying it’s healthy and natural for her to want real-life experiences that shape her artistry. Many believe dating could inspire deeper, more mature music and showcase emotional growth.
Others admit they feel a tiny bit protective. A few joked about “application forms” for potential boyfriends, while some playfully warned her not to break hearts — or have hers broken.
There are also netizens who simply hope she focuses on her craft first, especially as she’s just stepped into her 20s and independent career phase.
Overall though, the vibe leans positive. Most agree that Gigi Yim wanting to try dating feels honest, relatable, and refreshingly human.
What do you think? Should Gigi focus purely on music, or is it time she experiences love and lets that inspire her next era?
