The historical mystery drama Tian Du Yi Wen Lu (天都异闻录, also known by its unofficial English title Strange Stories from Tian Du) has officially wrapped filming after four months of shooting in Hengdian, with the production team confirming completion on 8 February 2026 and unveiling fresh character posters from the full cast.
Starring Xu Kai and Miles Wei Zheming as its dual male leads, the 36-episode series is adapted from the novel Tang An Wu Ming. The story centres on Shi Wuming, a gifted and sharp-minded county magistrate whose reputation for solving difficult cases earns him a transfer to the Dali Court in Tiandu City.
There, he is forced into partnership with Su Xuelou, a court official with a calm exterior and razor-edged instincts, as a string of unsettling cases begins to surface across the capital.
Although historical investigation dramas are nothing new in C-dramaland, Tian Du Yi Wen Lu leans heavily into mood and tension. Netizens have summed up its vibe with the now-viral phrase “yinshi guiwei”, often translated loosely as a damp, eerie, unsettling atmosphere.
Early stills and teasers show cold-toned lighting, heavy shadows, candlelit interiors and narrow alleys, all combining to create a suffocating sense of mystery that feels closer to a suspense film than a traditional costume drama.
Much of that atmosphere also comes from the relationship between its two leads. Shi Wuming is portrayed as sharp and restrained, while Su Xuelou carries warmth on the surface but keeps his true intentions carefully guarded.

Bound by unresolved grudges linked to their fathers’ past, the pair begin as reluctant allies and clear rivals. As investigations deepen, their dynamic shifts into a tense but effective partnership, with many viewers already fixated on the psychological push-and-pull between them rather than straightforward heroics.
Story-wise, the drama adopts a layered case structure, weaving smaller investigations into a larger overarching mystery.
Elements inspired by traditional folklore and dark historical customs are used not just for shock value, but to reflect power struggles, moral compromise and the cost of justice in a turbulent city.
This blend of classic Chinese mystery themes with a modern suspense rhythm has led some viewers to call it a potential new benchmark for costume crime dramas.
The supporting cast adds further texture to the narrative, with Zhang Huiwen and He Nan playing key figures whose loyalties and motivations remain deliberately unclear.
Special and guest appearances are scattered throughout the series, suggesting that many cases will be tightly contained yet interconnected, keeping the pace brisk across all 36 episodes.

Unsurprisingly, the casting has also fuelled lively fan discussion. Xu Kai’s supporters highlight his top billing and expect strong action and investigative scenes, while Wei Zheming’s fans focus on his subtle expressions and character depth.
Despite occasional solo-fan tension, general anticipation remains high, especially around how the drama balances star power with story-driven suspense rather than leaning purely on popularity.
With post-production now underway and MangoTV confirmed as the streaming platform, industry watchers expect the drama to premiere either late 2026 or early 2027. Online discussions continue to climb, with many netizens urging the platform to move quickly and praising the show’s visual ambition even before its first full trailer drops.
If you’re into dark historical mysteries, uneasy alliances and character-driven investigations, Tian Du Yi Wen Lu is shaping up to be one to keep on your radar. Do you think this eerie tone will set it apart from other costume crime dramas, or are you here mainly for the Xu Kai–Wei Zheming pairing?
