Matsumoto Iyo has officially stepped into the AKB48 universe. The veteran Japanese singer and entertainer has joined AKB48 as a special participating member in their latest song “Cécile”, appearing in the official music video released on 25 February, marking a rare and warmly received cross-generation collaboration.

Now 60 and celebrating the 45th year since her idol debut, Matsumoto Iyo’s participation instantly became one of the most talked-about surprises in AKB48’s recent history. “Cécile” itself carries an unusual backstory.

Yhe song was originally written by legendary producer Yasushi Akimoto for a special TV programme titled Akimoto Yasushi vs AI: AKB48 New Song Production Showdown, which aired in September 2025.

During the broadcast, Akimoto’s composition lost to a song generated by AI, putting “Cécile” at risk of being archived and never officially released.

Against the odds, the track was later revived and confirmed as a coupling song for AKB48’s 67th single “Nagori Zakura”, released on 25 February. What followed was an unexpected casting choice that pushed the song’s narrative even further.

The idea for Matsumoto Iyo’s involvement reportedly began as a light-hearted remark by her husband, comedian and TV presenter Hiromi, who joked during the programme that he wanted to see his wife sing the song.

That joke slowly turned into reality. When she later received the official offer to record “Cécile”, Matsumoto admitted she was genuinely taken aback.

“I actually heard about it from my husband first,” she shared. “I remember asking, ‘Am I really allowed to join?’ I was honestly surprised.”

In the “Cécile” music video, the story centres on a group of school dance club girls preparing a Showa-era idol-style performance for their cultural festival.

Matsumoto Iyo plays the mother of one of the students, blending nostalgia with modern idol energy.

Despite no longer being a teenage idol, her presence feels natural and grounded, adding emotional depth rather than stealing the spotlight.

“I was worried about the choreography and memorising the lyrics,” she confessed with a laugh. “I even asked Hiromi for advice. He jokingly told me to give it my all, which actually encouraged me.”

Her involvement did not stop at the MV. On 26 February, Matsumoto updated her Instagram to share her appearance as a guest at AKB48’s live-streamed release event held at the AKB48 Theatre.

The event celebrated the launch of “Nagori Zakura”, complete with full-song streaming, handshake events, and send-off gatherings at SHIBUYA TSUTAYA, creating a festive atmosphere around the release.

“Did you watch last night’s AKB48 new single live stream?” she wrote, thanking viewers for their support. Speaking about her participating track, she added, “Cécile is a very cute and easy-to-remember song. The choreography is adorable too, I’ve really grown attached to it.”

She also teased the MV release, saying, “It somehow feels very moving,” a simple comment that resonated strongly with long-time fans.

Photos shared from the event showed Matsumoto Iyo in a red checkered outfit with a beret and white socks, posing in front of the AKB48 Theatre logo.

Her styling echoed classic idol fashion, prompting her to comment, “I never imagined I’d get to wear the same outfit as AKB48. I’m so happy,” adding that she felt like she had become “an AKB48 member”.

Fan and netizen reactions quickly poured in, and opinions varied in interesting ways. Many praised the collaboration as “emotional”, “refreshing”, and “exactly what idol culture should be”.

Older fans were especially vocal, calling it a perfect bridge between Showa-era idols and modern groups. Some younger fans admitted they did not know much about Matsumoto Iyo beforehand, but said her presence made the MV feel warmer and more story-driven.

Others focused on the symbolic weight of the project, pointing out how a song that once lost to AI ended up gaining new life through a real, human, cross-generational connection. A smaller group felt the concept was unexpected but still welcomed it as a bold and memorable move for AKB48.

With “Nagori Zakura” now officially out and “Cécile” gaining renewed attention through this collaboration, the project has become more than just a coupling track. It has turned into a conversation about legacy, evolution, and what idol culture can look like when generations meet on the same stage.

What do you think about Matsumoto Iyo joining AKB48 for “Cécile”? Is this the kind of cross-generation collaboration you want to see more of, or did it catch you off guard?
