A single English sentence has turned a Chinese costume drama into a cross-border talking point. How Dare You!? (成何體統) has gone viral in South Korea after a palace scene unexpectedly drops the classic classroom exchange, “How are you?”, instantly triggering recognition, laughter, and mass meme creation across Asia.

The now-famous moment happens deep inside the imperial court, where logic usually bows to power, not English textbooks. Yu Wanyin, a notorious concubine whose body is inhabited by a modern office worker, suddenly tests the Tyrant Emperor Xiahou Dan with a line every Asian student knows by heart.

His reflex reply, “Fine, thank you, and you?”, confirms her suspicion in the most un-serious way possible, and that contrast is exactly why the scene exploded online.

Viewers quickly labelled the exchange as the ultimate “education DNA check”.

From Chinese social media to South Korean community boards, fans joked that no matter the era, region, or dynasty, that phrase is permanently engraved into collective memory.

Many Korean viewers said the line hit harder precisely because it felt universal, awkward, and deeply familiar, even inside an ancient palace setting.

Online reactions in China leaned towards disbelief and delight. Fans praised the drama for daring to lean fully into absurd humour rather than playing the transmigration trope safely.

Comments described the scene as “historically inaccurate but emotionally accurate” and “the most honest test of identity ever written”. Some viewers admitted they laughed before they even realised why.

South Korean netizens, meanwhile, took the joke a step further. Forum users suggested that if another secret code appears later, it should be done in Korean next time.

Others proposed different textbook phrases to see whether the emperor would still pass the test. This back-and-forth quickly turned into a shared meme space, with both sides remixing the moment in gifs, captions, and parody posts.

The buzz has translated into serious numbers. The drama surged to one of the highest opening-day popularity rankings in iQIYI’s history, while the emperor character’s popularity index crossed a milestone rarely seen on premiere day.

Wang Churan’s performance also gained attention for balancing icy elegance with unmistakable modern instincts, giving the character a layered charm that keeps viewers watching.

Beyond the jokes, fans say the scene works because it perfectly sums up what How Dare You!? does best. It blends palace politics, romance, and modern sensibility without pretending to be overly serious.

The story’s core, two transmigrators teaming up to rewrite a doomed script, feels lighter, smarter, and more playful because of moments like this.

With discussions still spreading across platforms, the question now is whether the drama can keep topping itself or if this scene will remain its most iconic moment. Did the “How are you?” exchange make you laugh, cringe, or feel personally called out by your school memories?
