AKB48 are back at the top of Japan’s music scene, and this time the numbers speak loud and clear. Their latest single “Nagori Zakura (名残り桜)” has officially broken the half-million sales mark within just two days, setting a fresh benchmark for the group’s recent releases.

According to SoundScan Japan’s sales report covering 23–24 February 2026, “NagoriZakura” sold an impressive 561,129 copies, achieving half-million status even before its first tracking week wrapped up.

The single officially hit shelves on 25 February 2026, released in five different versions, a strategy that clearly paid off in driving massive early demand.

On the Oricon Singles Chart, the song made an immediate impact by debuting at No.1, with estimated first-day sales of 392,637 copies

This marks a notable jump compared to the group’s previous single “Oh my pumpkin!”, which recorded 283,813 copies on its first day while also topping Oricon.

“Nagori Zakura” is AKB48’s 67th single, and it carries extra significance for fans. The title track introduces 19th-generation member Ito Momoka as centre for the very first time, a move that has been widely praised as a fresh and confident step for the group’s next era.

Her presence at the centre of a sakura-themed song has been highlighted by fans as both symbolic and emotionally fitting.

Adding to its historical weight, this release marks AKB48’s first main single with a sakura theme since “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” in 2011, making it a nostalgic moment for long-time followers while still feeling modern and polished.

Each limited edition of the single also includes “Mukaikaze”, the graduation song of Mukaichi Mion, which has further boosted interest among veteran fans.

Many have described the track as heartfelt and reflective, adding emotional value to the physical editions.

With this achievement, “Nagori Zakura” becomes AKB48’s third consecutive single to surpass half-million sales in its first week, following “Masaka no Confession” (65th single, April 2025) and “Oh my pumpkin!” (66th single, August 2025).

The group’s consistency in physical sales continues to underline their unrivalled position in the idol market.

Reactions online have been mixed but lively. Core fans celebrated the strong numbers as proof that AKB48’s traditional single model still works, especially with a new generation stepping into the spotlight.

Many praised Ito Momoka’s centre performance, calling it “refreshing” and “full of promise.”

On the flip side, some netizens pointed out the heavy reliance on multiple editions, sparking debate about whether future releases should balance sales tactics with digital-era strategies. Still, even critics admitted that maintaining this level of sales in 2026 is no small feat.

Looking ahead, Billboard JAPAN is set to release the three-day initial sales figures on 26 February, followed by the full weekly Top Singles Sales chart on 2 March. All eyes are now on whether “Nagori Zakura” can extend its momentum even further.

What do you think about AKB48’s latest record run? Is “Nagori Zakura” their strongest sakura song yet, or are you more excited about what the 19th generation will bring next?
