The countdown to one of China’s biggest sci-fi releases has officially begun. Andy Lau has wrapped up all his scenes for The Wandering Earth 3, marking a major milestone for the highly anticipated blockbuster ahead of its confirmed Chinese New Year 2027 release.
On 9 January, director Guo Fan shared a photo of a celebratory cake to mark the moment, using his signature dry humour to congratulate Andy Lau on completing filming. The message on the cake read, “Congrats to Hua Ge, filming completed successfully. If it’s not actually finished, may the success continue anyway.” It was a very Guo Fan way of saying the job’s done… almost.
Andy Lau officially completed his shoot on 9 January 2026, becoming the final lead actor to finish filming for the movie. Before him, Tong Liya wrapped her scenes on 26 November 2025, while Shen Teng completed his part right at the end of the year on 31 December 2025.
Andy Lau isn’t just another cast member in this franchise. His character, Tu Hengyu, was a key emotional pillar in The Wandering Earth 2, where the quantum scientist tried to preserve his daughter’s consciousness inside a digital life system after her tragic death.
That storyline struck a chord with audiences and elevated the sequel beyond pure spectacle.

Because of that, fans have been closely watching any update tied to his role in the third film. With Andy Lau now fully wrapped, many are reading this as a sign that the story structure is locked and post-production is about to enter full speed mode.
The production team has already confirmed that The Wandering Earth 3 will hit cinemas on the first day of Chinese New Year 2027. That slot is traditionally reserved for the biggest box office heavyweights, signalling strong confidence from the studio in both the film’s scale and audience appeal.
As the final chapter in China’s most successful sci-fi film series to date, expectations are naturally sky-high.
The third film brings back a powerhouse ensemble that blends emotional depth with blockbuster presence. The confirmed cast includes Wu Jing, Andy Lau, Li Xuejian, Qu Chuxiao, Li Guangjie, Tong Liya, Zhao Jinmai, Sha Yi, Wang Zhi, and Shen Teng.
This mix of veterans and younger stars suggests the story will continue balancing personal sacrifice with large-scale survival themes, something the franchise has become known for.
Online reactions have been buzzing since Guo Fan’s post went live. Many fans joked about the cake message, calling it peak director humour, while others focused on what Andy Lau’s completed shoot might mean for the film’s emotional core.
Some viewers are hoping his character gets a more hopeful resolution this time, while others are bracing themselves for another deeply moving arc.

There’s also growing discussion around how much further the film will push visual effects and world-building, especially after the massive leap seen between the first and second instalments.
Story-wise, the premise remains epic. With the sun nearing destruction, humanity once again relies on Earth’s massive thrusters to search for a new home in deep space.
But as always in this universe, the journey is anything but smooth. A new generation steps forward for a third time, facing impossible choices and racing against time itself.
Visually, audiences are expecting the most ambitious scale yet, with bigger space sequences, heavier emotional beats, and a clearer philosophical focus on what survival really costs. If the previous films are anything to go by, this won’t just be about saving the planet, but about what humanity is willing to give up along the way.
The hype train is only going to get louder from here. What are you hoping to see most in The Wandering Earth 3? A more emotional payoff, bigger sci-fi spectacle, or a bold ending that nobody sees coming?
