KBS2’s long-running weekend drama Our Golden Days (화려한 날들) has officially wrapped up its 50-episode journey, and the finale delivered exactly what viewers expected: heartfelt emotions, quiet regrets, and a powerful reflection on what truly matters in life. Directed by Kim Hyoung Seok, this comedy-romance family series closed with record ratings and a finale that sparked plenty of discussion among fans.
From romance and friendship to family pressure and unspoken sacrifices, Our Golden Days chose a grounded, emotional ending rather than flashy twists, leaving viewers with mixed feelings but a lasting message.
The final episode opens on a tense, emotional note as Lee Sang Cheol (Cheon Ho Jin) rushes to the hospital after hearing that his son Lee Ji Hyeok (Jung Il Woo) is in critical condition.
Ji Hyeok’s illness, long foreshadowed throughout the drama, finally reaches its breaking point as doctors confirm his condition has worsened.
On his way to see his son, Sang Cheol is involved in a devastating traffic accident.
Although paramedics manage to restart his heart, he never regains consciousness and is later declared brain-dead. Even in his final moments, Sang Cheol’s only concern is Ji Hyeok, repeatedly asking whether his son is safe.
Before losing consciousness, Sang Cheol leaves behind a recorded message.
In it, he asks that his heart be donated to Ji Hyeok if possible, quietly making the ultimate decision without seeking recognition or praise. The family is shattered, but his wife Kim Da Jeong (Kim Hee Jung) honours his wish, choosing to let him go so their son can live.
The transplant succeeds.
Three years later, the story jumps forward. Ji Hyeok has recovered, married Ji Eun O (Jung In Sun), and is living a modest but meaningful life as a husband and father.
In one of the drama’s most emotional scenes, Ji Hyeok visits the sea where his father’s ashes were scattered. Calling him “Dad” at last, he thanks him not only for giving him life, but for teaching him how to live it.

Meanwhile, Ko Seong Hui (Lee Tae Ran) ends up trapped in a loveless, hollow life with Park Jin Seok (Park Sung Geun).
Obsessed with status and appearances, she gives up her independence and dignity, living as a controlled housewife with no real freedom. Her ending sharply contrasts Ji Hyeok’s quiet happiness.
The drama closes with intercut scenes: Ji Hyeok smiling peacefully by the sea, and Seong Hui sitting alone in her luxurious home, emotionally empty. The message is clear and unmissable.
At its core, Our Golden Days is not a love triangle drama or a workplace success story. It is a story about generational sacrifice.
Lee Sang Cheol represents an ordinary father who spent his life putting his family first, often at the cost of his own dreams. His death is not portrayed as tragedy for shock value, but as a quiet, painful reality many families recognise. His final act is not heroic in a dramatic sense, but deeply human.
Lee Ji Hyeok’s survival is not framed as a miracle win. It comes with guilt, reflection, and maturity. By living on with his father’s heart, he symbolically carries Sang Cheol’s values forward: responsibility, humility, and emotional honesty.
On the other hand, Ko Seong Hui’s ending reinforces the drama’s moral stance. Wealth, status, and obsession with being “the lady of the house” bring her nothing but isolation. She chooses comfort over self-respect, and the drama does not offer her redemption because she never truly seeks it.
The ending asks a simple but heavy question:
Is a “golden life” about having more, or about understanding when enough is enough?
Jung Il Woo as Lee Ji Hyeok – Starts as a capable but emotionally distant man, ends as someone who understands love, loss, and gratitude.
-
Jung In Sun as Ji Eun O – A steady, warm presence throughout the drama, representing resilience and unconditional support.
-
Yoon Hyun Min as Park Seong Jae – Torn between friendship and love, he ultimately learns to step back and accept emotional boundaries.
-
Cheon Ho Jin as Lee Sang Cheol – The emotional anchor of the series, delivering a deeply memorable portrayal of a father’s quiet sacrifice.
-
Lee Tae Ran as Ko Seong Hui – A cautionary character whose choices lead her into emotional confinement rather than fulfilment.
A heartfelt, emotionally heavy finale that prioritises meaning over spectacle. Our Golden Days ends with loss, gratitude, and a strong message about family and values.
Slow at times, but emotionally sincere. The ending may not please everyone, but it stays true to the story it wanted to tell.
Is the ending sad or happy?
It’s bittersweet. There is loss, but also healing, growth, and emotional closure.
Has Our Golden Days been renewed for Season 2?
Season 2 is unlikely.
Is there any possibility of a sequel?
Fans may want one, but expectations should remain low. Most Korean dramas rarely receive sequels unless they are based on novels with follow-up material, which is not the case here.
What could happen if Season 2 existed?
A potential sequel could focus on Ji Hyeok as a father, exploring generational healing and the legacy of Sang Cheol. However, the story feels complete as it is.
Our Golden Days may not be a perfect drama, but it is an honest one. Its finale doesn’t chase shock value or easy happiness. Instead, it quietly asks viewers to look at their own families, their own priorities, and the meaning of a life well lived.
Did the ending work for you, or did it leave you wanting more? Let’s talk — this is one drama that hits differently depending on where you are in life.
