As Love Between Lines (轧戏) officially wraps up its run, conversations around the drama are far from slowing down. From its very first episodes to the finale, the urban romance series kept popping up in online discussions, especially for its emotionally charged romantic moments. With the dust now settled, leading man Chen Xingxu has finally opened up about the drama’s much-talked-about kissing scenes, the creative decisions behind them, and what truly stayed with him long after filming ended.
During an interview with Sohu Entertainment that took place while the drama was still airing, Chen Xingxu addressed the surprisingly heated debate around how many kissing scenes appeared in Love Between Lines. When told that viewers were estimating the number to be around 27, he was visibly taken aback. According to Chen Xingxu, counting scenes was never on his mind at all.
He explained that, for him, romance on screen is never about numbers or shock value. What matters is whether a moment appears naturally and lands at the right emotional point in the story. If it fits the rhythm of the characters and the narrative, then it works. If not, no amount of added scenes would make it meaningful.
One scene in particular quickly became a favourite among viewers: the car window kiss. Chen Xingxu revealed that, on paper, the scene was initially written in an extremely simple way.
The script only described the couple parting and sharing a kiss, without any detailed direction or emotional layering. However, once filming began, the moment was gradually reshaped into something far more striking.
That transformation, Chen Xingxu shared, came largely from the director Mao De Shu’s strong creative input. Throughout filming, Chen Xingxu repeatedly found himself surprised by how romantic scenes were framed and expanded visually.

From kisses under cherry blossoms to bicycle rides beneath blooming trees, many moments felt painterly and distinct from what he was used to seeing in similar dramas.
Chen Xingxu also noted that Mao De Shu’s choice of lenses, camera movement, and composition gave the drama its own visual language.
The director openly described romance as his strong suit, and on set, he constantly suggested new ideas to enhance emotional impact. The now-famous car window kiss, in particular, benefited from this hands-on approach, turning a simple script note into one of the drama’s most replayed scenes.
Beyond romance, Chen Xingxu also spoke candidly about his approach to acting and career pacing. He admitted that filming can be emotionally exhausting, describing it as a process that drains energy and focus. Because of this, he values quiet periods between projects, using that time to absorb real-life experiences and reset emotionally before stepping into a new role.
He also shared that he does not always feel completely relaxed while working, which is why he has become increasingly selective with scripts. Emotional accuracy, timing, and personal resonance now weigh heavily in his decisions.
This made his collaboration with Mao De Shu on Love Between Lines feel especially well-matched, as both placed strong emphasis on atmosphere and emotional truth rather than surface-level romance.

Among fans and netizens, reactions to Chen Xingxu’s comments have been mixed but lively. Some viewers praised his thoughtful approach, saying it explained why the romance in Love Between Lines felt more natural and immersive than typical urban dramas.
Others joked about his surprise at the kissing scene count, calling it a sign that the moments blended so smoothly into the story that even the actor didn’t notice how many there were. There were also discussions comparing Mao De Shu’s visual style to other romance directors, with many agreeing that the drama stood out for its mood and cinematic feel.
With all episodes now aired, Love Between Lines is increasingly being viewed as more than just another urban romance. Its focus on timing, visual storytelling, and emotional restraint has clearly left a strong impression, both on its audience and its leading actor.
Now it’s over to viewers—did those romantic moments feel perfectly timed to you, or did any scene stand out above the rest?
