Netflix’s Swedish psychological thriller Land of Sin (original title Synden) doesn’t just tell a dark, slow-burning story — it lives and breathes through its locations. Created by Peter Grönlund, the series follows veteran detective Dani as a deeply personal case drags her into a web of secrets, power struggles, and long-buried rot beneath a seemingly quiet countryside.

From misty farmland to lived-in city streets, the filming locations are more than just backdrops. They quietly shape the tension, isolation, and moral weight of Dani’s journey, making Sweden itself feel like an unspoken character in the story.

Filming reportedly kicked off around 18 March 2024 but faced an unexpected pause when actor Peter Gantman suffered a serious dog bite injury.

With only around ten days of his scenes left, production on those parts was delayed for roughly four months. Despite the setback, the team returned to finish filming, with the shoot officially wrapping in late October 2024.

Below is a clear breakdown of all confirmed filming locations.

1. Skåne County, Southern Sweden

Skåne County serves as the heart of Land of Sin and hosts the majority of the series’ filming. Known as Sweden’s southernmost region, Skåne is famous for its contrasts — wide open farmland, marshy wetlands, coastal stretches, and small communities that feel both close-knit and quietly guarded.

This geographical diversity mirrors the show’s themes perfectly. Peaceful landscapes sit alongside unease, reinforcing the idea that darkness doesn’t need big cities to grow. The production relied heavily on real locations rather than constructed sets, giving the series its grounded and almost documentary-like atmosphere.

2. Skurup Municipality

Skurup plays a major role in shaping the series’ visual mood. Several scenes were filmed in and around its fog-prone rural areas, where low visibility and flat land heighten the sense of uncertainty and emotional weight.

Wetlands around Skurup were also used extensively. Cast and crew often filmed knee-deep in water, requiring specially designed body suits to cope with the cold and terrain.

These scenes contribute to the show’s raw, uncomfortable realism, reinforcing how physically and mentally draining Dani’s investigation becomes.

3. Malmö, Skåne County

Malmö provides the urban counterbalance to the countryside. As Sweden’s third-largest city, it offers cobblestone streets, tight squares, and lived-in neighbourhoods that ground the series in everyday reality.

Filming took place across real streets, parks, and public spaces rather than closed sets, allowing the city’s natural rhythm to bleed into the show. Areas around local cafés and bakeries were also used, subtly blending daily life with the creeping sense that danger can exist in familiar places.

The contrast between Malmö’s openness and the isolation of rural Skåne helps underline the show’s core tension — secrets don’t disappear just because the setting changes.

4. Lilla Torg Area, Malmö

The historic heart of Malmö, known for its older architecture and compact layout, appears in several scenes. With its narrow paths and enclosed squares, this area adds a quiet claustrophobia that suits the show’s psychological tone.

Filming here likely captured recognisable corners of the city without drawing attention to them, allowing the environment to feel authentic rather than staged.

5. Industrial and Interior Locations in Skåne

The production also utilised what appears to be a repurposed indoor gas station, modified to fit key moments in the series. These controlled interior spaces contrast sharply with the open landscapes, offering a sense of containment and pressure.

Additionally, scenes near a fine carpentry workshop were reportedly filmed, contributing to the rustic, worn-in feel of the show. These locations emphasise tradition, labour, and generational presence — all subtle echoes of the story’s themes around inheritance, power, and control.

6. Gothenburg, Western Sweden

Beyond Skåne, parts of Land of Sin were filmed in Gothenburg. Several scenes were shot in the Eriksberg area, a waterfront district known for its industrial past and maritime identity.

One standout filming site was the East Indiaman Götheborg, used for shipboard sequences. The presence of the vessel adds a sense of history and legacy, visually reinforcing the idea of old systems and long-standing hierarchies that refuse to fade.

Every location in Land of Sin is carefully chosen to support its narrative weight. Open fields feel exposed, cities feel quietly observant, and industrial or historic spaces remind viewers that the past is never truly gone.
