After months of casting whispers and fan debates, the long-awaited Ming-era costume drama A Ming Dynasty Adventure (明月录) has finally put the rumours to rest. The production has officially confirmed Wang Churan as its female lead, alongside Xin Yunlai as the male lead, setting the stage for one of Mango TV’s most closely watched historical thrillers in recent years. With filming already underway, expectations are climbing fast.
Produced as a Mango TV original series, A Ming Dynasty Adventure began shooting on November 3 and is currently filming. The drama is adapted from the popular novel Back To My Husband’s Palace by Mu Lan Zhou, a title with a strong existing readership and a reputation for layered storytelling.
Direction is handled by Ren Haitao, with veteran screenwriter Rao Jun overseeing the script, adding further weight to the project’s creative credentials.
The casting of Wang Churan marks the end of a long speculation cycle. Names like Zhang Ruonan, Bao Shangen, Meng Ziyi and Peng Xiaoran had all been linked to the female lead role, but the final confirmation has largely satisfied viewers who were hoping for a strong visual and acting fit.

Among her generation, Wang Churan stands out for her elegant features and commanding screen presence, qualities that translate especially well into Ming-style costume dramas.
In the series, Wang Churan plays Wei Caiwei, a palace maid whose family is destroyed during the Gengxu Rebellion. After surviving the fallout, she reinvents herself as a wandering doctor and enters the capital alone, determined to uncover the truth behind her father’s framed sacrifice while evading those who want the past buried.
The role demands both emotional restraint and quiet strength, something many believe suits Wang Churan’s acting range.
Visually, early on-set sightings have already drawn attention. Her Ming-style costumes, particularly the blue and green ensembles, have been praised for their classical elegance and painterly quality.
The styling leans heavily into authenticity, with structured silhouettes and traditional hair arrangements that highlight poise over ornament. Many viewers say her look recalls classical beauty portraits rather than modernised costume trends.

Xin Yunlai takes on the role of Wang Daxia, a man who appears carefree on the surface but hides sharp intelligence and bravery beneath. His Ming-era styling has surprised viewers in a positive way, especially the lighter-toned robes and traditional headwear that soften his features while maintaining authority.
Compared to some of his previous roles, early impressions suggest a more agile and layered performance may be on the way.
The drama also brings an international touch with Thai actor Patrick Nattawat Finkler joining the cast as Ding Wu. This marks another step in his growing Chinese drama career following his supporting role in Speed and Love in 2025. His inclusion has sparked interest among overseas fans, particularly in Southeast Asia.
Story-wise, A Ming Dynasty Adventure blends historical suspense with political intrigue. Alongside Wei Caiwei’s investigation, the narrative introduces alliances formed under pressure, shifting loyalties, and moral grey zones common to Ming-era power struggles.

Themes of survival, justice, and identity sit at the heart of the plot, giving it more weight than a standard palace drama.
Online reactions so far are mixed but lively. Supporters are praising the visual direction, source material, and Wang Churan’s casting, while some remain cautiously optimistic about how the complex story will be adapted for television.
Comparisons with other Ming-style productions airing or filming this year are inevitable, especially as audiences become more sensitive to authenticity and performance quality.
As for release timing, there is no confirmed premiere date yet. Based on typical production and post-editing cycles, viewers can likely expect a late 2026 or early 2027 broadcast, with Hunan TV and Mango TV set as exclusive platforms.
A strong novel base, high-profile leads, and a darker historical thriller tone, A Ming Dynasty Adventure is shaping up to be a drama worth keeping an eye on.
Do you think this casting choice elevates the story, or are you still reserving judgement until another trailer drops?
