Chinese idol Ling Chao aka Didi, has found himself at the centre of online debate after videos showing a tense confrontation with a fan began circulating widely. The 24-year-old singer, who rose to public attention after appearing on the 2018 survival show Idol Producer and later debuted as a member of the C-pop boy group ONER, saw multiple related hashtags trend across social media within hours.

Footage shared by paparazzi and bystanders shows Ling Chao forcefully knocking a phone away from someone filming him at close range.

In the same clip, he appears to grab the person’s hoodie during the scuffle, causing her to lose balance and fall.

A staff member quickly intervenes and pulls him away, preventing the situation from escalating further.

Ling Chao Agency Clarifies Viral Fan Incident as Public Opinion Splits Online

Another video, reportedly filmed at a nearby car park, shows Ling Chao opening his vehicle door, grabbing a woman who was filming at the door, taking her phone and throwing it aside before returning to the car. The clips quickly fuelled speculation, with early online labels suggesting physical aggression toward fans.

Ling Chao’s management agency later released a statement addressing the situation. According to the agency, the incident did not take place at an airport but at a high-speed rail station.

They acknowledged that Ling Chao did seize the phone, which resulted in a damaged screen, but firmly denied any intentional physical harm.

The agency further stated that the individual involved was a long-term sisheng fan — a term commonly used for stalker-like fans who repeatedly invade artists’ personal space and private schedules.

They added that both parties have already negotiated compensation for the damaged phone, and the matter has been settled privately.

This is not Ling Chao’s first public clash with extreme fan behaviour. In the past, he has openly confronted sisheng fans during fan events, asking them to leave.

Two years ago, he also addressed the issue during a concert and later posted messages online urging such fans to stay away and respect boundaries.

Meanwhile, the fan involved in the current incident is suspected of posting online afterwards, claiming the encounter was “free sparring” and appearing oddly proud of the attention, which only added fuel to the already heated discussion.

Reactions have been divided. Some netizens expressed shock, arguing that regardless of provocation, a public figure should not respond physically, especially in a tense public space.

Others pushed back, saying the viral hashtag exaggerated the situation and that Ling Chao was reacting after being repeatedly cornered and filmed at close range.

A third group pointed to a wider issue — the lack of effective protection for artists dealing with persistent sisheng behaviour — arguing that emotional pressure can push even normally calm idols to breaking point.

Didi Ling Chao Airport Incident Reignites Discussion on Sisheng Fan Culture

The incident has reopened long-standing conversations about personal boundaries, public expectations of idols, and how far fan behaviour can go before it crosses the line.

What do you think — should artists be held to a higher standard at all times, or is this another example of unchecked sisheng culture pushing things too far?
