Chinese drama star Esther Yu Shuxin has officially returned to centre stage, and she has done so without noise, trailers, or advance hype. Her new romantic drama Speed and Love (双轨), co-starring He Yu, premiered suddenly on 12 December and quickly turned into one of the most discussed releases of the season.

The drama’s smooth and uninterrupted release has been widely interpreted as a clear signal from the industry: Esther Yu remains firmly active and trusted by production platforms. For many observers, it marked a turning point after months of uncertainty surrounding her career trajectory.

Over the past year, Esther Yu’s public image faced visible turbulence.

Earlier projects slowed, and the costume drama A Journey to Glow, where she was previously announced as the female lead, stalled indefinitely. As online discussion intensified, questions arose about her future projects and standing within the industry.

Those questions grew louder when A Journey to Glow’s official Weibo account quietly removed all posts related to her and unfollowed her personal account, strongly suggesting the collaboration had ended.

With the drama now expected to move forward with a recast, attention quickly shifted to whether Esther Yu would land on her feet.

The answer came faster than expected.

Speed and Love Premieres Without Warning — Then Climbs Fast

Originally scheduled for a November release, Speed and Love was abruptly delayed by iQIYI, prompting frustration among fans. When the drama finally dropped on 12 December without prior announcement, expectations were cautious at best.

Why Speed and Love Is Dominating Drama Charts

On its first day, the drama ranked 17th on iQiyi with a heat index of 6,487, while Maoyan placed it at No.13. However, momentum quickly built.

Within three days, Speed and Love surged to No.1 on Maoyan’s drama popularity and viewership charts, overtaking titles like Sniper Butterfly and The Vendetta of An.

The drama held the top spot from 14 to 15 December, briefly slipping to second place on the 16th as competition intensified — still an impressive run for a release with zero pre-promotion.

Poolside Kiss Scene Becomes the Breakout Moment

Much of the drama’s sudden popularity can be traced to Episodes 9 and 10, which pushed the emotional tension between the leads into overdrive.

Esther Yu plays Jiang Mu, a young woman harbouring long-standing feelings for her stepbrother Jin Chao (He Yu).

Although they share no blood relation, the history of growing up under the same roof creates a constant emotional push-and-pull.

A particularly discussed moment unfolds when Jin Chao confronts Jiang Mu about her curiosity towards his life. Her quiet response — “Because it’s you” — leaves him visibly shaken. The scene escalates with intense proximity, blurred boundaries, and unresolved emotion before Jiang Mu retreats in embarrassment.

Later, a dream sequence set at a sunset rooftop pool quickly became the drama’s viral highlight.

Jin Chao, bare-chested in the water, lifts Jiang Mu into his arms before the two share a lingering kiss surrounded by golden reflections. Soft touches, lingering gazes, and visual intimacy gave viewers exactly what idol-drama fans crave — romance with atmosphere.

While adapted from Shi Jiuyuan’s novel, the drama softens the darker elements of underground racing and illegal boxing, choosing instead to focus on emotional ambiguity and romantic tension.

The story follows Jiang Mu travelling to Thailand to find Jin Chao, only to discover he has become entangled in risky environments far removed from the brother figure she once knew. This contrast — innocence versus survival — forms the emotional backbone of the series.

Many viewers credit the drama’s success to the chemistry between Esther Yu and He Yu, as well as director Yu Zhongzhong’s visual approach.

Taiwanese outlet Upmedia praised the lighting and camera work, noting how close-ups and shifting angles bring out a softer, more cinematic side of Esther Yu.

“The visual language adds emotional layers,” one viewer commented, while another added, “Taiwanese directors really understand idol dramas.”

Speed and Love Tops Rankings While Esther Yu’s Next Costume Drama Is Confirmed

Not all feedback has been glowing. Mainland outlet Sohu Entertainment News noted that while the taboo-adjacent setup creates tension, the relationship progression feels rushed. Some viewers felt the leads behave like an established couple too early, reducing the emotional weight of their shared past.

Others criticised Esther Yu’s performance as feeling similar to her previous romantic roles, particularly in vocal delivery and expressions.

This stands in contrast to the broader praise she received for My Journey to You, where she was widely seen as breaking out of her usual mould.

Still, even critics acknowledge the drama’s ability to spark discussion — often the clearest sign of a hit.

Next Stop: Yun Chu Ling

Almost immediately after Speed and Love gained traction, the costume drama Yun Chu Ling officially announced Esther Yu as its female lead.

Adapted from a novel by Chao Yun Zi, the story follows Yun Chu, a noblewoman betrayed and killed by her husband, only to be granted a second life.

Armed with memory and resolve, Yun Chu navigates court politics from the shadows, reclaiming control over her fate.

While the male lead has yet to be confirmed, industry chatter points towards Zhang Yunlong, sparking debate over age gap and on-screen chemistry. With Speed and Love climbing charts and Yun Chu Ling moving forward at full speed, Esther Yu’s career appears to be stabilising — not through grand statements, but through consistent project movement.

Whether this momentum continues remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Speed and Love has shifted the conversation, placing Esther Yu back where she thrives most — at the centre of attention, driven by audience response rather than speculation.
