Lay Zhang (Zhang Yixing) has issued a heartfelt apology after being unable to attend EXO’s long-awaited fan meeting on 14 December, citing an important official duty that required his immediate return to Beijing.
The unexpected absence quickly sparked concern and confusion among fans, especially as Lay had recently been seen actively taking part in rehearsals. Many had been looking forward to his reunion with the group, marking one of his rare appearances in EXO’s full-group activities after focusing on his career in China.
Through a personal message shared on social media, Lay Zhang explained that he had to leave early in the morning to attend a significant event organised by the National Theatre of China.
He reassured fans that he arrived safely in Beijing and asked everyone not to worry.
More importantly, Lay Zhang openly expressed his regret over the situation.
He apologised directly to fans, his fellow EXO members, the company, and all parties affected by his sudden absence.
In his message, he warmly greeted fans who had shown concern and reiterated how sorry he felt for disappointing those who had been waiting for him.

Earlier on the same day, SM Entertainment released an official statement confirming that Lay would not be able to participate in the fan meeting due to unavoidable circumstances.
The company also apologised to fans for the short notice and asked for understanding, while confirming that SUHO, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun would proceed with the event as scheduled.
Given that Lay Zhang had reportedly been rehearsing in Korea for some time, the sudden announcement naturally led to widespread discussion online.
Fans expressed disappointment but also sympathy, with many agreeing that there must have been a compelling reason behind the last-minute change.
The EXO fan meeting, titled “EXO’verse”, is taking place today at Incheon’s Inspire Arena with sessions at 2pm and 7pm.
The remaining members are reuniting with fans through a fan meeting for the first time in nearly a year and eight months, making the event particularly meaningful despite Lay Zhang’s absence.
While fans were understandably saddened, Lay Zhang’s clear explanation and sincere apology have helped ease concerns, with many expressing continued support and hoping to see him reunited with EXO again soon.
