Hotel prices soar after Hua Chenyu concert announcement, local authorities to monitor overcharging

Fans of Hua Chenyu barely had time to celebrate his concert announcement before they were hit with another kind of shock — hotel prices in Wenchang suddenly skyrocketed overnight.

The Chinese pop star recently confirmed his much-awaited concert series, scheduled for 28–30 November 2025 at Wenchang International Aerospace City Rocket Industrial Park

Excitement immediately swept across social media, with thousands of fans planning their trips.

But just a day later, Weibo was flooded with complaints about soaring accommodation costs.

Some netizens reported that rooms that usually cost around 400 yuan per night had jumped to 1,500 yuan or more, leaving many fans struggling to find affordable places to stay for the concert weekend.

Others even claimed that certain hotels were no longer taking bookings, opting to “reopen” later at higher prices once demand peaked.

On 3 November 2025, a spokesperson from the Wenchang Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism responded to the uproar, confirming that the government had received multiple reports about unreasonable price hikes.

The official reminded travellers that any suspected overcharging could be reported through hotline 12345, allowing authorities to investigate and take swift action.

The bureau also revealed that several hotels in the city are already bound by a maximum guidance price — a set limit preventing extreme mark-ups during major events.

Properties not listed under that official guideline are still required to reference the standard rates used during rocket launches, since Wenchang’s aerospace site regularly attracts large crowds.

This isn’t the first time accommodation costs in Wenchang have gone through the roof.

Similar spikes have occurred during space launch events and national festivals, when hotels and guesthouses capitalised on the tourism surge.

However, the local government appears more proactive this time, aiming to keep things balanced for both visitors and local businesses.

As the concert draws closer, fans are hoping the city’s measures will ensure everyone can enjoy Hua Chenyu’s show — without having to spend a small fortune just for a bed.
