| ‘Replay’ Cancelled: GMMTV Responds to Debate Around Writer and Joylada Origins |
GMMTV officially pulled the plug on its upcoming series “Replay”, confirming the decision through a statement dated 28 November. The company said the cancellation followed extensive internal review, feedback from viewers, and joint discussions with the writer and all related teams.
According to GMMTV, the decision was made “by mutual agreement”, signalling that all parties were aligned in stepping back from the project.
Despite the abrupt halt, GMMTV reassured fans that the actors attached to “Replay” will not be left hanging.
New projects are already being lined up, and the company plans to announce fresh details once planning and pre-production are locked in.
The cancellation immediately reignited old debates surrounding the series’ writer, Julalumpa, a figure previously in the spotlight within the online fiction community.

“Replay” itself began its journey on Joylada, a popular digital fiction platform with strict rules prohibiting the sale of fanfiction.
These rules exist to maintain a non-commercial creative space where fans can write freely without monetising content based on public figures.
However, long-standing complaints resurfaced from Joylada users, who claimed the story that later inspired “Replay” had once been uploaded under a paid format through loopholes in the platform.
This sparked heated debate on whether monetising fan-inspired work—especially when closely modelled after real public figures—crossed the line.
Readers also pointed out that earlier drafts reportedly featured characters with names, personalities, and relationship dynamics resembling actual artists, raising concerns about using celebrity likeness without permission.

For many, the issue felt less like creative inspiration and more like using recognisable identities to attract commercial attention.
Another contentious moment arose when the work, originally known as fanfiction, was later repackaged and sold as an “original novel” after changing the character names.
To some, the revision felt like an attempt to erase the story’s fan-based origins, leaving long-time readers feeling overlooked.
The fallout wasn’t small. Joylada faced a wave of distrust, with some users stepping away entirely. Many still view the incident as one of the platform’s toughest reputational challenges.
So when GMMTV announced “Replay”, fans quickly connected it to the earlier controversy.
For them, the concern wasn’t about online drama—it was about recurring issues in creative ethics, responsible adaptation, and protecting artists’ images within a rapidly commercialising industry.
With the project now officially cancelled, attention shifts toward how GMMTV will rebuild confidence while preparing its new line-up for the cast. One thing’s certain: discussions around creative responsibility aren’t fading anytime soon.
