| “I’ve Overcome Them All”: Fan Bingbing Reflects on 7-Year Journey to Rebuild Her Career |
Seven years on from one of the most talked-about downfalls in Chinese entertainment history, Fan Bingbing is quietly — yet steadily — rewriting her story.
Once hailed as one of China’s biggest and brightest stars, the actress saw her glittering career come to a sudden stop back in 2018 after her tax evasion case.
The aftermath was harsh — acting bans, brand withdrawals, and an industry that seemed to turn its back overnight. But the Fan Bingbing of 2025 is not one defined by that chapter anymore.
Now 44, Bingbing has found her rhythm again, albeit beyond mainland China.
She’s based herself in Hong Kong, focusing on her thriving skincare brand Fan Beauty while slowly rebuilding her international career.
And it’s paying off — last year, she was named goodwill ambassador for Visit Melaka Year and starred in the Malaysian film Mother Bhumi.
Her moving performance in the film even earned her a Best Actress nomination at the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, which will take place in Taipei on 22 November.

Recently, Fan Bingbing took to Weibo to share a heartfelt post marking her seven-year journey since the scandal.
Sharing a photo of herself smiling with one hand over her eyes, she wrote:
“It’s been seven years — every hurdle was difficult, but I’ve overcome them all! Life has truly trained me to become a resilient woman. I’m proud that our entire team made such a great film! Love every one of you.”
The post quickly went viral, with fans and industry friends leaving messages of support.
One user commented, “Even greater blessings are yet to come,” while others praised her strength and grace in the face of adversity.
In an earlier chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Bingbing shared how those five years away from the limelight had been both a test and a revelation.
“It opened a new window for me. I got to encounter subjects and collaborators I’d never have met otherwise and discovered new creative impulses,” she said.
“Those five years allowed me to pause, absorb, reflect, and learn — to understand life more deeply.”
Bingbing also reflected on how hitting rock bottom reshaped her as both a person and an actor.
“Hitting the lowest point gave me resistance, courage and new emotional depth — anger, helplessness, pain — all of which become fuel for an actor,” she shared.
Despite her current success, the actress remains candid about the changing landscape of Chinese cinema.
“Audiences now prefer short online dramas — one-minute episodes they can binge while on the toilet! People no longer have the patience to sit quietly in a dark cinema and dream. It’s a great loss, not just in China but worldwide,” she noted.
As for what’s next, Bingbing isn’t ruling out a return to Chinese screens — but only under the right circumstances.
“If I ever get the chance to act in China again, I want it to be a project where I can truly feel something for the character,” she said.
For now, Fan Bingbing stands as living proof that even in an industry known for its ruthless turnover, resilience can rewrite any story.
She’s no longer chasing redemption — she’s crafting a brand-new chapter, on her own terms.
