A widely circulated Weibo video on 27 November has prompted significant concern across the entertainment industry, after actor Cheng Yi sustained an injury while performing a stunt for the historical drama Two Capitals Fifteen Days (Liang Jing Shi Wu Ri, 两京十五日).
The footage shows Cheng Yi executing a wire-assisted leap from a second-storey window, intended to land on the roof of the adjacent structure.
The manoeuvre failed when his head struck the roof’s edge, causing him to fall backwards.
He remained on the ground momentarily, holding his head as production staff rushed to assist him.
The video has since fuelled a heated discussion about current safety standards for high-risk scenes in Chinese drama productions.
Cheng Yi Reassures Public, Says Stunt Team Acted Responsibly
Amid growing public concern, Cheng Yi issued a personal message to fans, acknowledging the incident and clarifying the efforts made behind the scenes.
“Minor injuries are inevitable during filming, and I am very sorry that everyone saw today’s scene,” he wrote. Cheng Yi noted that the martial arts and wire-work teams consistently performed demonstrations beforehand and reassured fans that he only attempts stunts he believes he can execute safely.
He expressed gratitude for the support received and conveyed hope that the team’s dedication would be evident once the series airs next year.
Studio and Production Team Issue Statements, Promise Review of Safety Practices
Cheng Yi’s studio later confirmed that initial examinations indicated no serious discomfort, though further checks would continue.
They also noted that the drama team had begun reviewing their on-site protection measures to prevent similar incidents.
The official production team issued a formal apology to Cheng Yi, stating that health and safety would remain their highest priority.
They emphasised that the incident would serve as a key reminder to strengthen safety procedures and improve coordination between departments involved in action scenes.
Fans Demand Structural Changes and Medical Evaluation
Despite efforts from both studio and production representatives, Cheng Yi’s fan community remained unsatisfied.
His official fan club released a public statement on Weibo outlining serious concerns regarding the existing stunt team’s track record.
They alleged this was not the first time an unsafe situation had occurred and cited “major problems in the team’s professional competence and operational methods”, which they said had eroded trust.
The fan club issued two primary requests:
-
Immediate replacement of the current wire-work and stunt team with a recognised, top-tier professional group.
-
A thorough medical examination for Cheng Yi at an authoritative medical centre.
The statement stressed that fans would continue to monitor developments closely and would not accept any compromise regarding the well-being of Cheng Yi or any member of the production staff.

Industry Re-examines Safety Standards Amid Increasingly Demanding Action Scenes
The incident has renewed public attention on safety practices within Cdrama productions, which increasingly rely on complex action sequences and wire-assisted choreography. Industry professionals and viewers alike hope the situation will encourage improved regulation, clearer risk-assessment processes, and more robust training for on-set personnel.
Observers also note that the rapid production pace in the current drama market may be placing additional pressure on cast and crew, making comprehensive safety protocols even more crucial.
