Tony Leung has spoken up at last — and the internet is breathing a little easier. A clip of the legendary Hong Kong actor at the 36th Singapore International Film Festival on 29 November suddenly shot across social media, after he was asked directly about the rumours claiming he’d quietly settled down in Japan.
During the on-stage interview, Tony answered the question with his usual calm, choosing his words with care. He stressed that despite all the speculation, he doesn’t live in Japan permanently.
Instead, he visits from time to time — mostly to recharge, enjoy some quiet, and wander around unnoticed.
Tony admitted that what he likes most about being in Japan is the ability to switch off.
Because he doesn’t speak the language, he naturally ends up with very little social interaction — something that suits his famously low-key personality.
He put it simply: he enjoys being alone, and Japan gives him that space.
Rumours about him settling abroad had spread for months, fuelled by netizens posting photos of unexpected run-ins with him at cafés, streets, and shops across Japan. In the pictures,
Tony looked relaxed, cheerful, even more at ease than he usually appears during busy work days in China — sparking talk that he had bought a property and moved there for good. Influencers, bloggers, and drama fans only amplified the narrative.
It didn’t help that Tony has always spoken fondly of Japan. In previous interviews he mentioned loving how people keep to themselves and avoid disturbing others — a mindset he personally resonates with.
But with online discussions turning a bit heated, even simple comments about enjoying Japan morphed into debates and misinterpretations.
This time, Tony set the record straight.
Japan is just one of his favourite stopovers — not his permanent home.
He explained that whenever he has free time, he likes to explore different cities where he doesn’t know the language and can just drift around quietly without being recognised.
“I love getting lost in Tokyo,” he shared on stage, describing how liberating it feels to wander without needing to speak to anyone.
His clarification finally brings some calm to the chatter. The rumour has been floating around long enough, and Tony’s straightforward response makes it clear: he’s not relocating — he simply loves a peaceful escape.
