Hong Kong’s entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Lawrence Yan (Chun Chi Keung), who has passed away in Shanghai at the age of 59.

His wife, Fang Xin-yuan, confirmed the sad news through his official social media accounts, describing his final moments as “peaceful, surrounded by family.”

Yan rose to fame in the 1990s as one of ATV’s leading men, most notably portraying Zhan Zhao in the 1994 Hong Kong drama Heroic Legend of the Yang’s Family

His refined looks, heroic aura, and natural charisma earned him the nickname “The Handsomest Zhan Zhao in Hong Kong TV history.”

After a period away from the spotlight, Yan had recently returned to Hong Kong to pick up his acting career again.

He appeared in several guest roles and kept in touch with fans through Chinese social media, often sharing snippets of his daily life — from drumming sessions to golf outings.

Fans were hopeful about his comeback, which made news of his passing all the more shocking.

In a heartfelt obituary, Fang Xin-yuan described her late husband as “gentle as jade, with artistry that shone brightly and virtue that earned him many friends.”

She added that funeral arrangements would be kept simple, with further details to be shared later.

The message also expressed gratitude to colleagues and fans for their continuous love and support, urging everyone to remember Yan’s artistic achievements and the grace with which he lived.

Yan’s death has left both fans and industry friends heartbroken, especially as he appeared healthy and full of life in recent months.

Back in May, he even shared a light-hearted post after being rushed to the emergency room, reassuring followers that he’d recovered and was back on his feet.

Tributes have since poured in online from former co-stars, production crew, and loyal fans, many of whom recalled his professionalism and warmth off-screen.

To many, Lawrence Yan wasn’t just an actor — he was a symbol of a golden era in Hong Kong television, remembered for his effortless charm and lasting dedication to the craft.

In-short: As of now, the cause of Lawrence Yan’s death has not been publicly disclosed. His wife’s statement only mentioned that he passed away peacefully in Shanghai, surrounded by family, without providing further medical details. News outlets have also not reported any confirmed cause.
