Hong Kong Actor Gabriel Harrison Tearfully Appeals for Help to Save His Wife Amid Urgent Liver Transplant Crisis

Hong Kong actor Gabriel Harrison (52) has left fans deeply moved after making a tearful livestream appeal to help raise funds for his wife’s urgent liver transplant.

On November 8, the veteran actor suddenly went live on Instagram with the heartbreaking caption “Urgent Liver Transplant Needed”, revealing that his wife of eight years, Effie Mok, had been diagnosed with acute liver cirrhosis and was in critical condition.

Visibly shaken and fighting back tears, Gabriel said:

“With the help of our good friends, we’ve managed to raise HK$700K, but we still need HK$700K more. I hope everyone can help as much as they can, because every second matters.”

According to Gabriel, Effie was first hospitalised at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, where doctors confirmed her condition as severe.

After 20 days of waiting for updates, she was urgently transferred to Zhongshan Hospital in Guangzhou, where the liver transplant procedure is expected to cost around HK$1.5 million (S$251,000).

Despite managing to raise HK$700K (S$117K), the couple still faced a shortfall of HK$700K, prompting Gabriel’s emotional plea.

He reassured viewers that his appeal was genuine, saying:

“It’s now 10pm on November 8. I am not a scammer. There are many things I can do to prove it. My wife can have the liver transplant in the next two days, but we’re still short of a lot of money.”

A Cry for Help Turned Viral

The livestream quickly went viral across Hong Kong and Chinese social media platforms, drawing widespread sympathy and concern from fans and fellow actors.

Many praised Gabriel’s honesty and raw emotion, noting that it’s rare to see celebrities show such vulnerability online.

Soon after the broadcast, messages of support poured in from the entertainment industry, with fellow stars Louis Koo, Eric Tsang, and colleagues from Sky Team Entertainment reportedly stepping in to offer financial and moral support.

In a follow-up statement released a few days later, Gabriel clarified that his video came from a moment of helplessness and fear as his wife’s health deteriorated rapidly.

“Hello everyone, I’m actor Gabriel Harrison. First of all, I want to sincerely thank everyone for your concern and support for me and my family. My wife was recently rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong and diagnosed with acute liver failure. After consulting doctors, we learned that her situation is very serious and not optimistic.”

He confirmed that Effie had since been transferred to Guangzhou for further treatment, where she remains in the ICU

Gabriel admitted that the suddenness of the situation, coupled with soaring medical costs, pushed him into a state of panic when he made his live appeal.

“Our family’s financial resources have been stretched thin. My first reaction was fear and desperation. I didn’t plan or prepare—it was just a father and husband trying to save someone he loves.”

“Thank You for the Love and Prayers”

Since then, Gabriel has continued to update fans about Effie’s condition, sharing that her situation remains critical but stable.

He also posted a photo of himself holding his wife’s hand from the hospital, writing,

“My wife’s condition changes daily. I need to stay by her side and with my family. Please continue to send your blessings and prayers for her recovery.”

He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he’s received from fans, friends, and the entertainment community:

“Thank you to everyone who reached out or offered help. Your kindness has given me strength when I felt lost. Every message and prayer means more than words can express.”
