| Wang Can Explains Her Side After Being Accused of “Insulting” Song Hye Kyo |
Chinese actress Wang Can, wife of actor Du Chun, has found herself at the centre of online chatter this week after being accused of “insulting” South Korean star Song Hye Kyo — a claim she’s now firmly denying.
During a recent livestream, Wang Can addressed the issue directly, saying she was misunderstood and never intended to disrespect the Descendants of the Sun actress.
“If people say I don’t look like Song Hye Kyo, that’s fine. But please don’t use the word ‘insult’. I can’t accept that,” she said.
She went on to explain that she simply felt uncomfortable with how some netizens twisted the comparison.
“You can say I’m not similar to her, or that I look like another Chinese actress — I’d even take that as a compliment. But to say I resemble her and that’s somehow an insult to her? That’s just upsetting,” Wang Can clarified.
The actress also stressed that she holds deep respect for performers both in China and abroad.
“I have no issue being compared to anyone, as long as the words aren’t meant to bring others down,” she added.
This isn’t the first time Wang Can has had to respond to comparisons with Song Hye Kyo.
Earlier, she admitted she felt “a little sad” when people referred to her as Song’s “substitute”.
“I’m not as beautiful as her, and I’m not anyone’s replacement — I’m just myself,” she said.
Despite her clarification, some online users still claimed that Wang Can’s expressions and gestures looked similar to Song Hye Kyo’s, while others jumped to her defence, calling the criticism overblown and unfair.
The situation has since sparked wider debate on Chinese social media about celebrity comparisons and online etiquette.
Many netizens urged people to think twice before throwing around harsh words like “insult”, especially when no harm was intended.
In short, Wang Can’s message was simple: resemblance isn’t a crime, and admiration shouldn’t be mistaken for mockery.
