Noon Sunshine — the powerhouse studio known for polished, character-driven dramas like Nirvana in Fire and All Is Well — has officially confirmed the long-awaited release of De Xian Jin Zhi/Gezhi Town (得闲谨制), its first venture into feature films. The WWII-set drama will open in cinemas across China on 6 December 2025, positioning itself as a potential surprise hit in the packed year-end movie line-up.

Alongside the announcement, the studio dropped a brand-new poster and a punchy teaser titled Fight for Home

The short clip sets the tone immediately: ordinary villagers, a creeping threat on the horizon, and a tense build-up as people who once only wanted to survive find themselves forced to stand their ground.

War Story Through the Eyes of Ordinary People

Front and centre is machinist Mo Dexian (played by Xiao Zhan), who flees with his family to a remote mountain village called Gezhizhen in Western Hubei during the 1940–1943 conflict.

The film builds on the real atmosphere of the Battle of Western Hubei, focusing not on military strategy but on how everyday people were pushed into defending their home when danger found them.

The quiet refuge is shattered when an armed patrol suddenly appears near the village. From that moment, the story switches gears — civilians who had run from conflict must now face it head-on. It’s this “micro lens” approach that sets De Xian Jin Zhi apart from typical large-scale war productions.

On the official poster, Mo Dexian stands gripping a makeshift hammer at the mouth of the village, squared up against approaching danger.

That single image captured public attention instantly, pushing the film straight to the top of Maoyan’s trending charts. Pre-sales reportedly passed 5 million yuan shortly after the teaser dropped.

Reuniting Noon Sunshine’s Legendary Creative Trio

A big part of the hype comes from the names behind the camera. De Xian Jin Zhi reunites director Kong Sheng, writer Lan Xiaolong, and producer Hou Hongliang — the creative giants behind acclaimed titles like The Line of Life and Death. Their reunion alone is enough to stir interest among long-time drama fans.

Lan Xiaolong drew heavily from his own long-term work on the Defence of Yichang, shaping the script across three arcs:

  • The fall of Nanjing

  • The loss of Yichang

  • The victory at Shipai

The result is a grounded yet layered story of people who slowly realise that survival sometimes requires a fight, no matter how reluctant.

Director Kong Sheng admitted the journey was anything but simple.

“I wanted to make something more straightforward,” he shared, “but ended up choosing the most challenging path. This story is completely unpredictable.”

Xiao Zhan’s Complete Transformation

Xiao Zhan Leads Noon Sunshine’s First-Ever Film ‘De Xian Jin Zhi

One of the biggest talking points is Xiao Zhan’s physical and emotional shift for the role. Gone is his usual polished leading-man look.

In the teaser, Mo Dexian is covered in grime, wearing coarse work clothes, carrying mud and soot like second skin — a man who has lived through chaos.

Mo Dexian’s arc begins simply: protect his family, escape danger, keep moving. But as the situation escalates, he becomes an unexpected pillar of strength, rallying civilians and inspiring collective courage.

Peng Yuchang steps into the role of an artillery commander separated from his unit, navigating the harsh realities of being cut off from the main force.

Zhou Yiran plays Xia Cheng, Mo Dexian’s wife, who fiercely protects their child even as the world collapses around them.

The film’s title — De Xian Jin Zhi — comes from an engraving on a handmade weapon created by Mo Dexian. “De Xian” is his name; “Jin Zhi” roughly translates to “made with care and responsibility.”

It’s a nod to traditional craftsmanship and a symbolic reminder that he bears responsibility not only for his own family, but for everyone relying on him.

To recreate the era authentically, the production team constructed a full-scale Gezhizhen village set in Yichang, Hubei, shooting for more than 90 days.

Where to Watch ‘De Xian Jin Zhi’

De Xian Jin Zhi will have an exclusive theatrical release in China starting 6 December 2025. As of now, Noon Sunshine has not yet announced any international streaming partners, but based on the studio’s previous distribution patterns, the film is expected to land on major platforms after its cinema run.

Here’s what to expect:

  • China:
Available only in cinemas nationwide from 6 December 2025.

  • International Release:
No overseas cinema rollout confirmed yet, but industry watchers expect later availability through platforms commonly associated with Chinese film releases, such as iQIYI International, Tencent Video (WeTV), or Youku, depending on licensing deals.

  • Streaming Timeline:
Typically, Noon Sunshine titles reach streaming 2–4 months after their theatrical window, so a worldwide online release may fall around early to mid-2026.

Once the studio confirms the official streaming platform, I can update this section for you immediately.

A Potential Year-End Dark Horse

December isn’t usually the most competitive month for box office in China, but 2025 is shaping up differently. De Xian Jin Zhi will release alongside high-profile contenders such as:

  • Integrity 2, a crime thriller with Aaron Kwok and Simon Yam

  • My Father’s Son, a sci-fi arthouse film previously selected for the Shanghai International Film Festival

Even so, industry watchers are already eyeing De Xian Jin Zhi as a strong dark horse thanks to Noon Sunshine’s consistent track record, a compelling emotional theme, and a cast with undeniable box office pull.

If it lives up to expectations, this could easily become one of the standout dramas of late 2025 — and an impressive first step for Noon Sunshine into the world of feature filmmaking.
