| Alice Chan Wai Finds Love Again at 47: “I Thought No One Would Want Me” |
Now 51, the Miss Asia 1996 winner opened up in a recent radio interview about her turbulent years in the industry, her painful divorce, and the unexpected love story that changed everything.
🌸 From Miss Asia Glory to Quiet Struggles
Alice first entered the spotlight nearly three decades ago, but her career at ATV wasn’t all glitz and glamour.
She recalled that during her lowest moments, she would often hide her struggles from her family.
Even after stepping away from showbiz in 2008 to focus on her marriage, she quietly faced personal battles — including her late mother’s fight with liver cancer.
“My mum passed in 2011,” she shared softly.
“She actually saw how I got along with my then husband. I’ll never forget her saying, ‘If it’s not right, then separate.’ That one sentence completely changed how I saw things. It made me realise that even she, who once endured so much, wanted me to live freely. Because of her, I found peace with my decision to divorce.”
💔 Life After Divorce: “I Thought Love Was Over for Me”
After her divorce from Taiwanese businessman James Yen in 2012, Alice returned to Hong Kong and signed with TVB, throwing herself entirely into work.
“I honestly thought love was over for me,” she admitted.
“At 47, I just assumed no one would want me anymore. I focused on acting — it was my way of numbing myself.”
But fate had a different plan.
While filming Forensic Heroes IV, Alice was introduced to Dr. Aldous Chan through actor Raymond Cho.
At first, it was just friendly chats — until one incident changed everything.
“One day, I had such bad period pain that I nearly fainted on set,” Alice recalled.
“Later, I called him for medical advice, and instead of just telling me what to do, he showed up at my flat with medicine and a bowl of porridge. That’s when I knew — he truly cared.”
🫶 Love That Heals
Alice spoke fondly of how her husband’s gentle personality and thoughtfulness helped her heal.
When her father fell ill in 2022, Dr. Chan would even use his lunch breaks to visit and treat him personally.
“He drove from Tseung Kwan O to Tuen Mun just to give my dad injections,” she said emotionally. “I’ll forever be grateful for that. He didn’t just love me — he loved my family too.”
💬 Communication Is Key
Looking back, Alice Chan Wai reflected that her first marriage fell apart due to poor communication. This time around, it’s the complete opposite.
“We talk about everything,” she laughed.
“Even though we’re both introverts, there’s nothing we hide. He knows me fully, and I know him — no guessing games anymore.”
She revealed that they never really discussed having children, saying with a smile, “He already has kids from his first marriage, and I’ve never really thought about it. We’re happy and free as we are.”
💍 “At 47, I Already Knew He Was the One”
When asked about their marriage, Alice playfully shared that her husband proposed a year later than she expected.
“I already felt he was the one when I was 47,” she laughed.
“He proposed when I turned 48 — a bit late, but it was worth the wait.”
Now approaching her 30th year in the industry, Alice Chan continues to thrive both professionally and personally, recently reuniting with actress Jessica Hsuan in TVB’s anniversary drama Queen of the Tower (巨塔之后) — a project that’s already drawing buzz.
🌹 A Second Chance at Happiness
From beauty queen to TVB veteran, from heartbreak to healing — Alice Chan’s story is a reminder that love doesn’t follow a timeline.
As she beautifully puts it, “Sometimes, the right person just shows up when you’ve stopped searching.”
