AKB48 will not release ‘Oh My Pumpkin!’ MV despite winning Planning Award

AKB48’s choice not to release an MV for their special single disappoints fans, as many feel a group of their calibre should deliver full visuals.

AKB48 fans can finally breathe out a tiny sigh of relief — and maybe a laugh — because 66th single Oh my pumpkin! has officially walked away with the Planning Award at the 67th Japan Record Awards

But behind the shiny prize, centre Oguri Yui has opened up about the slightly awkward fact fans already knew: the group never released a music video for the single.

In her post on Twitter, Oguri kept things honest, calling the track “very important” to her but admitting that the lack of an MV left her with “complicated feelings”.

Given AKB48’s long-standing tradition of releasing proper visuals for every major single, the absence of one this time has been a bit of a head-scratch for fans.

Still, she says the award has now “rewarded” all those mixed emotions — a neat way of saying, yes, we all know it was weird, but at least it worked out.

A Win That Might Have Saved Management’s Reputation (Just Slightly)

The award itself isn’t random.

AKB48’s ‘Oh my pumpkin!’ Snags Japan Record Awards Planning Prize

The Planning Award goes to works that make a meaningful contribution to music culture through innovative concepts — and Oh my pumpkin! definitely fits that theme.

The single marked AKB48’s 20th anniversary, bringing together:

  • current AKB48 members,

  • senior graduates who returned for the project,

  • and international sister groups (including members who managed to join without any notable production issues).

Fans have been pointing out for months that MNL48 managed to deliver their own version with no delays or strange gaps, subtly hinting that the lack of an MV on the Japanese side might have been down to logistical hiccups or simply questionable management decisions.

Whether it was scheduling clashes, budget limits, or just overly ambitious planning, we still don’t officially know. But the silence from management hasn’t stopped fans from discussing it loudly.

Oguri Yui’s Full Viral Message: Honest, Warm, and Very Yui-like

In her post, she thanked senior members and overseas participants, saying the single holds a special place in the group’s history — especially as she was chosen to stand centre for such a milestone project. She also promised to show AKB48’s “full strength” at the Record Awards ceremony.

It’s a sentimental message laced with a bit of bittersweetness, but also pure determination — a very fitting vibe for AKB48’s 20th year.

So… MV When?

At this point, probably never.

But with an award in hand and a warm message from its centre, Oh my pumpkin! now feels less like an odd blemish in AKB48’s discography and more like a strangely charming moment: a single that somehow triumphed even without the group’s usual flashy production.

Not releasing an MV for a special single from a group of AKB48’s calibre is a huge disappointment for fans.

And honestly? That’s a very AKB48 way to celebrate a 20th anniversary — chaotic, unpredictable, but still managing to pull off a win.
