Sato Airi to Release First Photobook Shot in Singapore and Bintan Island

AKB48’s rising ace, Sato Airi, is kicking off 2026 with a major milestone. It’s been officially confirmed that she will release her first-ever photobook on 28 January, with shoots carried out in Singapore and Indonesia’s Bintan Island. 

For members of the AKB48 Group, securing a photobook is considered a major privilege, often reserved for those with clear public momentum. Before a photobook project moves forward, management conducts careful research and surveys to gauge both interest and sales confidence — making this announcement a clear indicator of Airi’s growing influence.

Her upcoming release is said to capture the pure, bright charm that’s become synonymous with her “Smile Angel” persona. 

It also marks her first time being photographed in swimwear and lingerie, offering a fresh and bold direction for the young ace. 

Fans can also look forward to special images featuring custom-made outfits designed exclusively for this project by Osarecompany, the long-standing creative team responsible for countless AKB48 costumes.

The photobook doesn’t just highlight her visuals — it represents a symbolic turning point. 

As AKB48 steps into its 21st year, Sato Airi stands at the forefront of a new era, and this release frames her growth from multiple angles: as a performer, as an individual, and as a future-leading member of the group.

Her Thoughts on the Release

Airi shared her genuine excitement about the project, calling the photobook a “surprise present” in celebration of AKB48’s 20th anniversary milestone. 

“I’m incredibly happy to release a photobook right as we step into the group’s 21st year,” she said. 

“It’s something I’ve always aimed for, but when I first received the news, I was shocked and honestly a bit nervous. Even so, the staff were so supportive during the shoot. It became such a joyful, dream-like experience that I didn’t want it to end. I think this book captures the ‘me of right now’ — my individuality, my new challenges, and my fleeting self both as a person and as an idol. I hope this becomes a work that stays in everyone’s memory.” 

She added, “I hope people will look at it and say, ‘This is amazing!’ I want fans to enjoy every moment of this journey.”

By October the same year, she became part of the senbatsu for the 60th single “Hisashiburi no Lip Gloss” while still a trainee. 

She was promoted to full member in March 2024. In June, she made her first drama lead in “Hoshikuzu Telepath” (TV Tokyo), and in July, she achieved her long-time dream of centring a title track with the 64th single “Koi Tsumunjatta.”
