The new workplace drama Love’s Ambition (许我耀眼) is smashing records left and right. Starring Zhao Lusi and William Chan, the series has only been out for four days but it’s already pulled ahead of The Journey of Legend, hitting a Tencent heat index of 31,000 — the fastest-climbing drama of the year so far.

But it’s not just the leads causing a buzz. 

Wang Yiyao, who plays Sun Siwei — the sharp-tongued, calculating office rival to Zhao Lusi’s Xu Yan — has unexpectedly become the breakout star of the show.

Sun Siwei is written as the ultimate office schemer, constantly throwing shade at Xu Yan and digging into her private life. 

She accuses Xu Yan of landing her job purely thanks to her rich husband, Shen Haoming (William Chan), and becomes even more obsessed with unmasking her after learning Xu Yan had hidden her true family background before marrying into the Shen family.

Of course, her elaborate plans tend to backfire. 

In one now-viral scene, Sun Siwei slaps Xu Yan in front of Shen Haoming, only to be completely humiliated herself. 

In another, she ropes Xu Yan’s “fake father” into a live broadcast in an attempt to expose her lies — but once again Xu Yan turns the tables. 

These high-stakes confrontations have quickly become fan-favourite moments, and Wang Yiyao’s fiery delivery makes Sun Siwei more than just a one-note antagonist.

According to Baidu Index, searches for Sun Siwei skyrocketed to 2 billion, making her the most popular supporting character in the drama — only trailing behind Zhao Lusi’s Xu Yan and William Chan’s Shen Haoming. 

That’s an extraordinary leap for Wang Yiyao, who’s been steadily building her career with scene-stealing supporting roles.

Drama fans will remember Wang Yiyao from The Legend of Shen Li as Jin Niangzi, from Guardians of the Dafeng as Li Miaozhen, and from The Demon Hunter’s Romance where she played Ban Niang, a terrifying yet strangely captivating owl demon. 

She also made her mark in A Story of Kunning Palace and The Longest Promise, often appearing briefly but always leaving a strong impression.

Now, thanks to Love’s Ambition, she’s broken out of the supporting-actress mould. 

Her portrayal of Sun Siwei is proof she can command just as much attention as the drama’s leads — and with popularity soaring this fast, Wang Yiyao looks set to move firmly into the spotlight.
