Toei’s Super Sentai ending with Gozyuger after 50 years on TV Asahi

TV Asahi confirms Toei’s Super Sentai series will end with Gozyuger, closing a 50-year legacy since Gorenger and marking the end of an era.

Well, it’s finally happening — something fans never thought they’d see. After nearly 50 years of colourful heroes, giant robots, and Sunday-morning nostalgia, TV Asahi has announced that the currently airing No.1 Sentai Gozyuger will be the final entry in the legendary Super Sentai line.

Yep, the very same saga that began back in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Gorenger is officially reaching its curtain call.

🏁 Half a Century Later…

For those who grew up with capes, helmets, and team roll-calls shouted at full volume — this news hits right in the childhood.

From Gorenger to Zyuranger, from Dekaranger to Zenkaiger, each era had its own charm. Gozyuger was launched earlier this year as the 49th installment, marking the franchise’s golden 50th anniversary — and apparently, its swan song.

Behind the scenes, reports say the long-running partnership between Toei and TV Asahi is winding down.

The reason’s not dramatic — just reality catching up.

The show’s production costs have ballooned, while event and merch revenue aren’t keeping pace with the rising budgets and shorter toy lifespans.

Basically, the numbers no longer transform as smoothly as the rangers do.

💭 What This Could Mean

Right now, three big theories are swirling in fan circles:

It’s only ending on TV Asahi. Sentai might shift to another broadcaster or streaming platform, meaning the heroes themselves live on, just off the Asahi grid.

The “Super Sentai” brand is retiring. Toei could keep the same hero-team formula but under a new name — something fresher, modern, maybe even global-friendly.

Full reset incoming. A brand-new IP that reboots the concept entirely — new lore, new name, new toys, and no direct link to the past five decades.

Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: Gozyuger will be remembered as the one that closed the book on a cultural giant.

🕹 Legacy That Spanned Generations

Created by the legendary Shōtarō Ishinomori (Kamen Rider, Cyborg 009), Super Sentai wasn’t just TV — it was a movement.

It set the template for team-based hero storytelling across Asia, influenced countless anime, and even gave birth to the Power Rangers phenomenon in the West.

You can’t talk Japanese pop culture without mentioning those rainbow suits and giant mechs.

💬 Fans Are Emotional

Social feeds have exploded with bittersweet reactions.
Some are calling it “the true end of tokusatsu childhood,” while others hope Toei’s just planning a rebrand for a new era.

Long-time fans are already organising tribute threads, ranking favourite teams, and reminiscing about the first roll-call they memorised.

🔭 So… What’s Next?

There’s no official word yet from Toei or TV Asahi about the future of the brand.

But with the All Super Sentai Exhibition tour travelling around Japan this year, it does feel like a proper victory lap — a respectful send-off before the heroes hang up their helmets.

Whatever comes after Gozyuger, it’s clear this is the end of one age and maybe the start of another

If we’ve learnt anything from decades of Sentai, it’s that heroes always find a way to rise again — even after the final transformation call.
