| Phoebe Miu Opens Up on Six Years in 'Upload' Series and Why She Won’t Work with Dad Michael Miu |
When you’re the daughter of Hong Kong screen legend Michael Miu and actress Jaime Chik, it’d be easy to expect a career in showbiz to come knocking. But Phoebe Miu hasn’t exactly gone for the obvious route.
Instead of diving straight into acting back home, the 34-year-old started out behind the lens as a photographer, quietly honing her craft and staying away from her parents’ spotlight.
Now, she’s made a surprising leap onto the international stage — appearing in the American sci-fi comedy Upload.
Phoebe plays Yang, a struggling resident in the show’s virtual afterlife world.
What began as a supposed two-day gig unexpectedly turned into a six-year journey with the series, which is now gearing up for its final season.
Speaking about the experience, Phoebe admitted she’s deeply grateful: “It was supposed to be something small, but it grew into this huge part of my life. I’ll always treasure the people, the laughs, and the friendships I found on set.”
Phoebe’s decision to build her career overseas rather than lean on her family name in Hong Kong wasn’t accidental.

She’s been vocal about wanting to keep her personal and professional lives separate.
Asked whether she’d ever team up with her father on screen, she previously replied: “I don’t want to work with him because my personal life is personal and work is work. He’s popular, but he’s also my dad — so it’s different.”
That independence seems to be paying off.
By working abroad, Phoebe has managed to establish her own identity as an actress, away from comparisons to her superstar parents.
With Upload coming to an end, fans are now wondering if Phoebe might finally return to Hong Kong for new opportunities — maybe even surprising everyone with a home-grown project.
While she hasn’t ruled it out, she’s made it clear she’s more interested in continuing to explore her own path rather than stepping into her dad’s shadow.
Whatever comes next, Phoebe Miu’s journey from photography to Hollywood proves she’s more than capable of writing her own chapter in the family’s legacy.
